Book excerpt: Now revised and updated to incorporate numerous new materials, this is the major source for researching American Christian activity in China, especially that of missions and missionaries. It provides a thorough introduction and guide to primary and secondary sources on Christian enterprises and individuals in China that are preserved in hundreds of libraries, archives, historical societies, headquarters of religious orders, and other repositories in the United States. It includes data from the beginnings of Christianity in China in the early eighth century through 1952, when American missionary activity in China virtually ceased. For this new edition, the institutional base has shifted from the Princeton Theological Seminary (Protestant) to the Ricci Institute for Chinese-Western Cultural Relations at the University of San Francisco (Jesuit), reflecting the ecumenical nature of this monumental undertaking.

Book Synopsis Strange Names of God by : Sangkeun Kim

Download or read book Strange Names of God written by Sangkeun Kim. This book was released on 2004. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most precarious and daunting tasks for sixteenth-century European missionaries in the cross-cultural mission frontiers was translating the name of «God» (Deus) into the local language. When the Italian Jesuit Matteo Ricci (1552-1610) introduced the Chinese term Shangti as the semantic equivalent of Deus, he made one of the most innovative cross-cultural missionary translations. Ricci's employment of Shangti was neither a simple rewording of a Chinese term nor the use of a loan-word, but was indeed a risk-taking «identification» of the Christian God with the Confucian Most-High, Shangti. Strange Names of God investigates the historical progress of the semantic configuration of Shangti as the divine name of the Christian God in China by focusing on Chinese intellectuals' reaction to the strangely translated Chinese name of God.

Book Synopsis Saving God's Face by : Jackson Wu

Download or read book Saving God's Face written by Jackson Wu. This book was released on 2013-04. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Years ago, the author had a startling realization. Theologians and pastors have long taught on the glory of God and its central importance in the Bible. However, because he was living in East Asia, it also dawned on the author that this sort of talk about God's glory, praising Him, and magnifying His name was simply another way of talking about honor and shame. When the author looked at most theology and ministry-related books, he found that honor and shame seemed to be treated differently. Anthropologists talked about honor-shame, but theologians largely focused more on legal metaphors. The author could see both themes in Scripture but couldn't find help as to how to bring them together. This study was developed in order to address this gap and bring those themes together. Book Synopsis The Fascinating God by : N. Standaert

Download or read book The Fascinating God written by N. Standaert. This book was released on 1995. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The object of this book is the name of the Christian God in Chinese language. Taking a text of a 17th Chinese Christian author as his starting point, Standaert focus only on the names of Shangdi, Tian and Tianzhu. Anyone attempting inculturation in Chinese culture might benefit from reading the writings of the 17th century Chinese Christians. For these writings also convey an implicit answer to the question: how to express the Christian faith and experience when entering Chinese culture? These 17th century Chinese Christians faced some fundamental questions that still exist today. Questions like: Who is God and how can God's name be expressed in Chinese? Why was Jesus Christ not born in China? What is sin and how can it be remitted? Dialogue with these fundamental questions and with the answers they gave can be a help for inculturated theology today.
