Book excerpt: Saint Hildegard is a woman and a saint of many talents. A Benedictine abbess of a monastery in Germany, she was not only known as a Christian mystic and a visionary, but also as a philosopher, a composer, and a writer. Canonized in May, 2012, she was also named a Doctor of the Church by Pope Benedict XVI. She is the fourth woman Doctor of the Church standing with St. Theresa of Avila, St Catherine of Siena, and St. Therese of Lisieux (the Little Flower). A remarkable woman, St. Hildegard offered spiritual advice to many, and turned to others for advice such as St. Bernard of Clairvaux. The harmony of God's creation appeared fully in her visions and spoke to the dignity of both men and women. While full of humility she was not lacking in boldness and bravely confronted the controversies and heresies of her day. She is even more, perhaps, a woman of today's time than her own with her emphasis on ecology, medicine, natural science, gardening, and "the complementary relationship of men and women." She is indeed, as Pope Benedict said, a worthy role model for Catholics today. Her liturgical feast day is September 17.
