Book Synopsis Uniform Fantasies by : Jeffrey Schneider

Download or read book Uniform Fantasies written by Jeffrey Schneider. This book was released on 2023-07-26. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starting in the nineteenth century in Germany, colourful military uniforms became a locus for various queer male fantasies, fostering an underground sexual economy of male prostitution as well as a political project to exploit the army’s prestige for queer emancipation. In the first decade of the twentieth century, however, a series of scandals derailed this emancipatory project. Simultaneously, public debates began to invoke homosexuality, sadism, transvestism, and other sexological concepts to criticize military policies and practices. In pursuing the threads with which queer authors and activists stitched their fantasies about uniforms, Jeffrey Schneider offers fresh perspectives on key debates over military secrecy, disciplinary abuses in the army, and German militarism. Drawing on a vast trove of materials ranging from sexological case studies, trial transcripts, and parliamentary debates to queer activist tracts, autobiographies, and literary texts, Uniform Fantasies uncovers a particularly modern set of concerns about such topics as outing closeted homosexuals, the presence of gay men in the military, and whether men in uniform are more masculine or more insecure about their sexual identity.

Book Synopsis How, When, and Why Modern Art Came to New York by : Marius de Zayas

Download or read book How, When, and Why Modern Art Came to New York written by Marius de Zayas. This book was released on 1998. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marius de Zayas (1880-1961), a Mexican artist and writer whose witty caricatures of New York's theater, dance, and social elite brought him to the attention of Alfred Stieglitz and his circle at "291," was among the most dedicated and effective propagandists of modern art during the early years of this century. His writings were the first to provide the American public with an intellectual basis upon which to understand and eventually appreciate the newest artistic developments. How, When, and Why Modern Art Came to New York, originally written in the 1940s, is a fascinating chronicle assembled from de Zayas's personal archive of photographs and from newspaper reviews of the exhibitions he discusses, beginning with those held at the Stieglitz gallery and including important shows mounted in his own galleries: the Modern Gallery (1915-1918) and the De Zayas Gallery (1919-1921)

Book Synopsis Adventures in the Arts by : Marsden Hartley

Download or read book Adventures in the Arts written by Marsden Hartley. This book was released on 2011-10. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Working at a pivotal time in art history, artist Marsden Hartley was in the center of it all. In his classic collection of essays, Adventures in the Arts, he offers curious readers a friendly tour of his interests, personal experiences, and close acquaintances; so many of which proved to be the most important people and ideas of the time. From Impressionism and American Art, to the birth of Modernism and the spread of photography, Hartley offers us a familiarity with and an understanding of twentieth century art from its very foundations.:: "The papers in this book are not intended in any way to be professional treatises. They must be viewed in the light of entertaining conversations. Their possible value lies in their directness of impulse, and not in weight of argument. I could not wish to go into the qualities of art more deeply. A reaction, to be pleasant, must be simple. This is the apology I have to offer: Reactions, then, through direct impulse, and not essays by means of stiffened analysis." -Marsden Hartley
