Book Synopsis Multi-risk Interactions Towards Resilient and Sustainable Cities by : Tiago Miguel Ferreira

Download or read book Multi-risk Interactions Towards Resilient and Sustainable Cities written by Tiago Miguel Ferreira. This book was released on 2023-04-24. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For years, researchers have studied the risks of individual natural hazards in urban areas. However, the impact of multiple hazards has not yet received widespread attention in research and urban management practice, which is a significant gap in the current climate change context. This book aims to contribute to filling that gap by examining the process of identifying, assessing, and managing multi-hazard risks in urban areas. From identifying and assessing the vulnerability of the elements exposed to the impact of natural hazards, including earthquakes, floods, fires, and landslides, this book covers all the critical stages of multi-hazard risk assessment and management in a climate change context. The concepts and approaches discussed in the book are applied to the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, a dynamic and thriving metropolis, allowing readers to see those theories applied in a real setting. In addition to providing a solid theoretical foundation, this book offers practical guidelines for conducting risk assessment at the metropolitan scale, which makes it a valuable resource for researchers, practitioners, and decision-makers interested in understanding and managing multi-hazard risks in urban areas.

Book Synopsis Advances in Natural Hazards and Volcanic Risks: Shaping a Sustainable Future by : Ana Malheiro

Download or read book Advances in Natural Hazards and Volcanic Risks: Shaping a Sustainable Future written by Ana Malheiro. This book was released on 2023-04-20. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book comprises the selected proceedings of the 3rd International Workshop on Natural Hazards (NATHAZ’22), Angra do Heroísmo, Terceira Island, Azores, 2022. The book interests all researchers and practitioners in Earth Sciences, Volcanic Risks, Natural Hazards, Geoethics, Environmental Sciences and Engineering. Terceira is a volcanic island with volcanic systems with caldera (Cinco Picos, Guilherme Moniz, Santa Bárbara and Pico Alto central volcanoes) and an active fissural zone defined by various alignments of small volcanic cones, lava domes and fault zones. The agricultural landscape, the natural and forest reserve, as well as the natural pools make the island a unique place to visit. The historic downtown of Angra do Heroísmo is a UNESCO world heritage, and several iconic buildings witness the island’s geodynamic history. Natural hazards result from a threat of a naturally occurring event that will have a negative effect on humans. That damaging effect is often called natural disasters. Among the natural hazards and potential disasters to be considered are: earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, subsidence, floods, droughts and coastal erosion. In addition, anthropogenic hazards occur as a result of human interaction with the environment. They comprise technological risks due to exposure to hazardous substances in the environment. Natural systems in different frameworks require a comprehensive understanding of climatology, geology, hydrology and volcanic data, processes and dynamics. Thus, it is important to perform hazard and risk assessment studies to accomplish hazard mitigation. In addition, it highlighted the role of variability and climate change in Earth systems. Furthermore, an accurate understanding of the natural systems and interactions with engineering, geodiversity and natural resources is vital to the entire socioeconomic sector. This book is expected to offer an overview of natural hazards in model regions in Europe, America, Asia and the Atlantic islands. It gives new insights into the characterization, assessment, protection, and modelling of geological hazards, volcanic systems, urban areas, coastal zones and engineering approaches by international researchers and professionals. The scientific committee comprises lead geoscientists, natural hazards related practitioners, and academics worldwide. The main topics include: 1. Multi-hazards and risks: sustainable society, disasters and geoethics 2. Natural hazards and assessment: rock falls, landslides, urban planning and management 3. Sustainable Earth systems: hazards and climate change 4. Terceira Island geology and geodiversity: meeting volcanological hazards in the Azores

Download or read book Advanced Nondestructive and Structural Techniques for Diagnosis, Redesign and Health Monitoring for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage written by Ahmad Osman. This book was released on 2022-06-04. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the success of the first published book on “Nondestructive Evaluation and Monitoring Technologies, Documentation, Diagnosis and Preservation of Cultural Heritage”, this book will includes peer reviewed papers submitted to the conference in form of single independent chapters. Each chapter will highlight the benefits of one or more Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) methods, image processing and data analysis methods and their applications on cultural heritage sites. This book demonstrates Non-destructive sensing technologies and inspection modules as main tools for documentation, diagnosis, characterization, preservation planning, monitoring and quality of restoration, assessment and evaluation of material and preservation work. Within this book, the benefits of NDT methods and their applications will be demonstrated on diverse and important cultural heritage sites and monuments around the world. NDT sensing technologies and inspection modules are becoming main tools for the documentation, diagnosis, characterization, preservation planning, monitoring and quality control of restoration, assessment and evaluation of materials and preservation works. Distinguished scientists and representatives of the National Geographic Society, the Cultural Heritage Finance Alliance, the International Council of Monuments and Sites ICOMOS, the Organization of World Heritage Cities OWHC, the European Society for Engineering Education SEFI, the European Construction Technology Platform ECTP, the International Federation of Surveyors FIG, the International Committee CIPA Heritage Documentation, the World Monuments Fund and other major International and European Organizations, Associations, networks Universities and Research Centers in the field of cultural heritage preservation, participate in to the International Steering Committee which had successfully organized the 1st TMM_CH Conference as well.

Book Synopsis Urban Resilience for Risk and Adaptation Governance by : Grazia Brunetta

Download or read book Urban Resilience for Risk and Adaptation Governance written by Grazia Brunetta. This book was released on 2018-08-02. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together a series of theory and practice essays on risk management and adaptation in urban contexts within a resilient and multidimensional perspective. The book proposes a transversal approach with regard to the role of spatial planning in promoting and fostering risk management as well as institutions’ challenges for governing risk, particularly in relation to new forms of multi-level governance that may include stakeholders and citizen engagement. The different contributions focus on approaches, policies, and practices able to contrast risks in urban systems generating social inclusion, equity and participation through bottom-up governance forms and co-evolution principles. Case studies focus on lessons learned, as well as the potential and means for their replication and upscaling, also through capacity building and knowledge transfer. Among many other topics, the book explores difficulties encountered in, and creative solutions found, community and local experiences and capacities, organizational processes and integrative institutional, technical approaches to risk issue in cities.
