Book excerpt: Monitoring Forest Damage with Mass Spectrometry-Based Metabolomics Methods Understand forest responses to climate change with this timely introduction Forests are among the most critical parts of our global ecosystem, responsible for the air we breathe, home to most of the earth’s species, and crucial sources of food and raw materials. Forest development is therefore one of the most important areas of ecological study, and damage to forests is potentially existential. Metabolomics, a toolkit which accrues data on interactions between genetic and environmental conditions, promises to advance our understanding of how these vital ecosystems respond to dramatic changes in climate and environment. Monitoring Forest Damage with Mass Spectrometry-Based Metabolomics Methods offers a thorough, accessible discussion of metabolomic techniques and their applications in forest tree research. It promises to enrich the reader’s understanding of how forests are being transformed by globe-spanning changes, and to arm researchers with tools for reacting to these potentially epochal developments. Monitoring Forest Damage with Mass Spectrometry-Based Metabolomics Methods readers will also find: Analysis of specialized secondary metabolites such as phytohormones Detailed discussion of ecologically important tree genera such as Pinus, Populus, Quercus, and many more Supplementary materials related to study design, sample preparation, and instrumental analysis protocols Monitoring Forest Damage with Mass Spectrometry-Based Metabolomics Methods is ideal for researchers in analytical chemistry, mass spectrometry, metabolomics, forest research, the life sciences, and all other related fields.

Book Synopsis Monitoring Forest Damage by : Sören Wulff

Download or read book Monitoring Forest Damage written by Sören Wulff. This book was released on 2012. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A renewed interest in forest damage monitoring has led to a shift in information requirements, as the crown condition assessments initiated in the 1980s in response to the threats posed by air pollution need to be complemented by assessments of specific damages and their causes as well as populations of plausible damaging agents and early signs of damage outbreaks. The aims of this project were to assess past and current methods of monitoring forest damage in Sweden and to set up a new monitoring system that would be better adapted to the information requirements. The current information needs assessments of forest damage to be timely and to be made at several spatial scales. To meet the information needs a new Swedish forest health assessment system has been developed and includes several interacting components targeting the information requirements for strategic and operational decision making, and accommodates a mechanism for continuously expanding the knowledge base. The new system is likely to become increasingly important due to anticipated climate change and should be of interest for anyone concerned in forest damage and with monitoring activities.

Book excerpt: The demand for comparable, long-term, high quality data on forest ecosystems' status and changes is increasing at the international and global level. Yet, sources for such data are limited and in many case it is not possible to compare data from different monitoring initiatives across space and time because of methodological differences. Apart from technical manuals, there is no comprehensive multidisciplinary, scientific, peer-reviewed reference for forest monitoring methods that can serve and support the user community. This book provides in a single reference the state-of-the-art of monitoring methods as applied at the international level. The book present scientific concepts and methods that form the basis of the transnational, long-term forest monitoring in Europe and looks at other initiatives at the global level. Standardized methods that have been developed over two decades in international forest monitoring projects are presented. Emphasis is put on trans-nationally harmonized methods, related data quality issues, current achievements and on remaining open questions. A comprehensive overview of needs, requirements, organization and possible outcomes of an integrated monitoring program Tested and quality assured, internationally harmonized methodologies based on a complete revision of existing methods carried out in 2009-2011 Connection with monitoring results allows assessment of the potential of the monitoring method
