Book Synopsis Molecular Genetic Approaches in Conservation by : Thomas Bates Smith

Download or read book Molecular Genetic Approaches in Conservation written by Thomas Bates Smith. This book was released on 1996. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molecular techniques are proving invaluable in determining the phylogenetic status of potentially endangered species, for investigating mechanisms of speciation, and for measuring the genetic structure of populations. It is increasingly important for ecologists and evolutionary and conservation biologists to understand and use such molecular techniques, but most workers in these areas have not been trained in molecular biology. This book lays out the principles and basic techniques for the molecular tools appropriate for addressing issues in conservation, and it presents case studies showing how these tools have been used successfully in conservation biology. Examples include the genetic analysis of population structure, various uses of DNA in conservation genetics, and estimation of migration parameters from genetic data. Wildlife managers, as well as researchers in these areas, will find this a valuable book.

Book Synopsis Molecular Genetic Approaches in Wildlife Conservation by : Ranjana Bhaskar

Download or read book Molecular Genetic Approaches in Wildlife Conservation written by Ranjana Bhaskar. This book was released on 2019. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wildlife conservation is of major biological importance due to the survivability of organisms in an ecosystem and population stability. The primary concern of the management and genetics of populations is inbreeding. The small population size can play a diminishing role in genetic variability and increasing inbreeding in animal populations. Inbreeding depression can be due to major factors such as rare, deleterious, recessive alleles which can be repressed under heterozygous conditions. The decreasing effect in heterozygosity can be significant upon severe bottleneck effect. The genetic variations between populations could be assessed using molecular techniques. Mitochondrial DNA variations for determining the founder,Äôs effect can be widely applicable in the management of wild populations. The maternal lineages in a captive population can signify the variations in the population as well as the number of males contributing to the gene pool of the various population. Molecular markers can be used to differentiate between populations and identify the individuals contributing to the gene pool of the species.

Book Synopsis Conservation Genetics in the Age of Genomics by : George Amato

Download or read book Conservation Genetics in the Age of Genomics written by George Amato. This book was released on 2009-08-07. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genome sequencing enables scientists to study genes over time and to test the genetic variability of any form of life, from bacteria to mammals. Thanks to advances in molecular genetics, scientists can now determine an animal's degree of inbreeding or compare genetic variation of a captive species to wild or natural populations. Mapping an organism's genetic makeup recasts such terms as biodiversity and species and enables the conservation of rare or threatened species, populations, and genes. By introducing a new paradigm for studying and preserving life at a variety of levels, genomics offers solutions to previously intractable problems in understanding the biology of complex organisms and creates new tools for preserving the patterns and processes of life on this planet. Featuring a number of high-profile researchers, this volume introduces the use of molecular genetics in conservation biology and provides a historical perspective on the opportunities and challenges presented by new technologies. It discusses zoo-, museum-, and herbarium-based biological collections, which have expanded over the past decade, and covers the promises and problems of genomic and reproductive technology. The collection concludes with the philosophical and legal issues of conservation genetics and their potential effects on public policy.

Book Synopsis You Deserve, We Conserve by : M. W. Pandit

Download or read book You Deserve, We Conserve written by M. W. Pandit. This book was released on 2007. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a tremendous wealth of mega-biodiversity in the world. But the very existence of this wealth is under threat due to habitat destruction, pushing animals towards inbreeding depression and thereby paving way for their extinction. This has made essential human intervention and assisted reproductive technologies. Thus, the issues of conservation of wildlife and biodiversity have become the need of the hour, especially in terms of policy making at the government level. You deserve, We Conserve: A Biotechnological Approach to Wildlife Conservation contains 16 articles by scientists engaged in research on the conservation of wildlife, role of reproductive technologies and modern approaches being followed in wildlife conservation. It also deals with various techniques used in field conditions such as chemical capture, molecular genetics, ultrasonography, cryopreservation, wildlife forensics, etc. The present book will be of special interest to professionals engaged in forest and environment related activities, particularly wildlife conservationists, students pursuing their career in veterinary discipline of wild animals and policy makers. It will also be useful for nature enthusiasts, who have an interest in wildlife
