Book Synopsis Mobilities in Life and Death by : Avril Maddrell

Download or read book Mobilities in Life and Death written by Avril Maddrell. This book was released on 2023-06-06. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book focuses on migrant and minority cemetery needs through the conceptual lens of the mobilities of the living and the dead. In doing so, the book brings migration and mobility studies into much-needed dialogue with death studies to explore the symbolically and politically important issue of culturally inclusive spaces of cemeteries and crematoria for migrants and established minorities. The book addresses majority and minority cemetery and crematoria provisions and practices in a range of North West European contexts. It describes how the planning, management and use of cemeteries and crematoria in multicultural societies can tell us about the everyday lived experiences of migration and migrant heritage, urban diversity, social inclusion and exclusion in Europe, and how these relate to migrant and minority experience of lived citizenship, practices of territoriality and bordering, colonial/postcolonial narratives. The book will be of interest to readers in the fields of migration/mobilities studies and death studies, as well as policy makers and practitioners, such as local government officers, cemetery managers and city planners.

Book Synopsis Mobilities: New Perspectives on Transport and Society by : John Urry

Download or read book Mobilities: New Perspectives on Transport and Society written by John Urry. This book was released on 2016-04-22. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing together the leading authors currently working at the intersection of social science and transport science, this volume provides a companion to the well-established and extensive international Transport and Society series. Each chapter, and the volume as a whole, offers closer and richer consideration of the issues, practices and structures of multiple mobilities which shape the current world but which have typically been overlooked or minimised. What this approach seeks to do is not only draw attention to many new areas of research and investigation relating to mobile lives, but also to point to new theories and methods by which such lives have to be researched and examined. Such new theories and methods are relevant both to rethinking 'transport' studies as such but are also recasting 'societal' studies as 'transport' so that it comes out of the ghetto and enters mainstream social science.

Book Synopsis Italian Mobilities by : Ruth Ben-Ghiat

Download or read book Italian Mobilities written by Ruth Ben-Ghiat. This book was released on 2015-07-24. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Italian nation-state has been defined by practices of mobility. Tourists have flowed in from the era of the Grand Tour to the present, and Italians flowed out in massive numbers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries: Italians made up the largest voluntary emigration in recorded world history. As a bridge from Africa to Europe, Italy has more recently been a destination of choice for immigrants whose tragic stories of shipwreck and confinement are often in the news. This first-of-its-kind edited volume offers a critical accounting of those histories and practices, shedding new light on modern Italy as a flashpoint for mobilities as they relate to nationalism, imperialism, globalization, and consumer, leisure, and labor practices. The book’s eight essays reveal how a country often appreciated for what seems immutable - its classical and Renaissance patrimony - has in fact been shaped by movement and transit.

Book Synopsis Event Mobilities by : Kevin Hannam

Download or read book Event Mobilities written by Kevin Hannam. This book was released on 2016-03-17. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Events from a mobilities perspective attend to moments in which individual networks coalesce in place but are not isolated in their performance as they often foster far-reaching and mobile networks of community. In so doing, individuals travel from varying distances to participate in localized performances. However, events themselves are also mobile, and events affect mobility. Mobile events serve as contexts that provide meanings and purpose articulated in relation to, and as, a series of other social actions. They further highlight the role of the body and embodied practices in the performance of events. Building on Sheller and Urry’s (2004) seminal work Tourism Mobilities, the purpose of this book is to further develop event studies research within mobilities studies so as to challenge the limitations that dichotomous understandings of home/away, work/leisure, and host/guest play. Simply put, events are always already place-based and political in the sense that they can both inspire mobility as well as lead to various immobilities for different social groups. The title addresses everyday as well as extraordinary events, shining an empirical and theoretical lens onto the political, economic and social role of events in numerous geographic and cultural contexts. It stretches across academic disciplines and fields of study to illustrate the advantages of a mobilities multi-disciplinary conversation. This groundbreaking volume is the first to offer a conceptualization and theorization of event mobilities. It will serve as a valuable resource and reference for event, tourism and leisure studies students and scholars interested in exploring the ways the everyday and the extraordinary interlace.

Book Synopsis Geographies, Mobilities, and Rhythms over the Life-Course by : Elaine Stratford

Download or read book Geographies, Mobilities, and Rhythms over the Life-Course written by Elaine Stratford. This book was released on 2014-11-20. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By thinking in terms of the geographies of mobilities, we are better able to understand the central importance of movements, rhythms and shifting emplacements over the life-course. This innovative book represents research from a new and flourishing multidisciplinary field that includes, among other things, studies on smart cities, infrastructures and networks; mobile technologies for automated highways or locative media; mobility justice and rights to stay or enter or reside. These activities, cadences and changing attachments to place have profound effects—first upon how we conduct or govern ourselves and each other via many social institutions, and second upon how we constitute the spaces in and through which our lives are experienced. This scholarship also has clear connections to numerous aspects of social and spatial policy and planning.
