Posteriormente, en los decenios de 1980 y 1990, el estudio de la migración interna se contrajo. Hay argumentos y evidencia fragmentaria y puntual para señalar que algunos cambios estructurales modificaron el patrón migratorio y lo convirtieron en predominantemente urbano-urbano. El procesamiento de los microdatos de los censos de la región - que hasta hace poco era una opción técnicamente inviable pero que en la actualidad es factible gracias al software REDATAM desarrollado por CELADE - permite ampliar y profundizar el conocimiento de estos cambios.
