Book Synopsis Model Emergent Dynamics in Complex Systems by : A. J. Roberts

Book excerpt: Arising out of the growing interest in and applications of modern dynamical systems theory, this book explores how to derive relatively simple dynamical equations that model complex physical interactions. The author?s objectives are to use sound theory to explore algebraic techniques, develop interesting applications, and discover general modeling principles. Model Emergent Dynamics in Complex Systems unifies into one powerful and coherent approach the many varied extant methods for mathematical model reduction and approximation. Using mathematical models at various levels of resolution and complexity, the book establishes the relationships between such multiscale models and clarifying difficulties and apparent paradoxes and addresses model reduction for systems, resolves initial conditions, and illuminates control and uncertainty. The basis for the author?s methodology is the theory and the geometric picture of both coordinate transforms and invariant manifolds in dynamical systems; in particular, center and slow manifolds are heavily used. The wonderful aspect of this approach is the range of geometric interpretations of the modeling process that it produces?simple geometric pictures inspire sound methods of analysis and construction. Further, pictures drawn of state spaces also provide a route to better assess a model?s limitations and strengths. Geometry and algebra form a powerful partnership and coordinate transforms and manifolds provide a powerfully enhanced and unified view of a swathe of other complex system modeling methodologies such as averaging, homogenization, multiple scales, singular perturbations, two timing, and WKB theory.

Book Synopsis Computational Models of Complex Systems by : Vijay Kumar Mago

Download or read book Computational Models of Complex Systems written by Vijay Kumar Mago. This book was released on 2013-10-31. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computational and mathematical models provide us with the opportunities to investigate the complexities of real world problems. They allow us to apply our best analytical methods to define problems in a clearly mathematical manner and exhaustively test our solutions before committing expensive resources. This is made possible by assuming parameter(s) in a bounded environment, allowing for controllable experimentation, not always possible in live scenarios. For example, simulation of computational models allows the testing of theories in a manner that is both fundamentally deductive and experimental in nature. The main ingredients for such research ideas come from multiple disciplines and the importance of interdisciplinary research is well recognized by the scientific community. This book provides a window to the novel endeavours of the research communities to present their works by highlighting the value of computational modelling as a research tool when investigating complex systems. We hope that the readers will have stimulating experiences to pursue research in these directions.

Book excerpt: In April 2007, the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) approved the Priority Program 1324 “Mathematical Methods for Extracting Quantifiable Information from Complex Systems.” This volume presents a comprehensive overview of the most important results obtained over the course of the program. Mathematical models of complex systems provide the foundation for further technological developments in science, engineering and computational finance. Motivated by the trend toward steadily increasing computer power, ever more realistic models have been developed in recent years. These models have also become increasingly complex, and their numerical treatment poses serious challenges. Recent developments in mathematics suggest that, in the long run, much more powerful numerical solution strategies could be derived if the interconnections between the different fields of research were systematically exploited at a conceptual level. Accordingly, a deeper understanding of the mathematical foundations as well as the development of new and efficient numerical algorithms were among the main goals of this Priority Program. The treatment of high-dimensional systems is clearly one of the most challenging tasks in applied mathematics today. Since the problem of high-dimensionality appears in many fields of application, the above-mentioned synergy and cross-fertilization effects were expected to make a great impact. To be truly successful, the following issues had to be kept in mind: theoretical research and practical applications had to be developed hand in hand; moreover, it has proven necessary to combine different fields of mathematics, such as numerical analysis and computational stochastics. To keep the whole program sufficiently focused, we concentrated on specific but related fields of application that share common characteristics and as such, they allowed us to use closely related approaches.
