Book Synopsis Career Behaviour and the European Parliament by : William T. Daniel

Book excerpt: Career Behaviour and the European Parliament seeks to answer the question of how a political institution, such as the European Parliament, can impact the career ambitions and behaviours chosen by European politicians. Long considered a 'second order' legislature in its degree of political importance and prestige, the European Parliament is the only directly elected institution within the European Union and is an increasingly important part of the European legislative process. Using a major new source of quantitative data and interviews with more than 50 current and former European legislators, this book argues that as the institution has become increasingly professionalized and powerful, the volatility of its membership has declined. However, the professional ambitions of its members vary greatly by national background, leading to an uneven distribution of legislative seniority and influence within the legislature. The book presents a new theory with political careers acting as institutions in themselves, and also offers complete background information on all elected Members of the European Parliament, from 1979-2014.

Book Synopsis Impact of Career Paths on MEPs' Activities by : Robert van Geffen

Download or read book Impact of Career Paths on MEPs' Activities written by Robert van Geffen. This book was released on 2016. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing powers of the European Parliament in recent decades have made it a more attractive institution for ambitious politicians keen to build their political career in the EU's multi-level system. A key contribution to the debate about the career paths of MEPs is made by Scarrow ([Scarrow, S.E., 1997]). Her work, which identified three different career paths taken by MEPs, has been widely cited and used as a basis for other studies on this topic. Building on Scarrow's work, this paper describes two additional categories of MEPs - former national politicians and 'one-off' MEPs - and links MEPs' careers with their activities in Parliament. It finds that over and above the factors that have previously been identified as influential on an MEP's behaviour, his or her career path and ambitions are relevant in explaining certain legislative behaviour across Member States and party groups.

Book Synopsis The Polish Delegation in the European Parliament by : Krzysztof Zuba

Download or read book The Polish Delegation in the European Parliament written by Krzysztof Zuba. This book was released on 2023-06-14. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the example of the Polish delegation to the European Parliament, the book examines the factors influencing the cohesion and stability of EP national delegations. It takes into account the impact of institutional arrangements such as the electoral law and the candidate selection process, the ideological and programmatic profiles of political parties, the career paths of MEPs, affiliation to political groups in the EP, group switching, as well as the significance of Euroscepticism and national divisions transferred to the European level. It is not a typical case study, as the regularities discovered through the in-depth analysis of the Polish national delegation are compared with those characteristic of other national delegations in the EP. The book fills a gap in studies devoted to the EP, in which the importance of national delegations has not so far been the subject of thorough analyses.
