Book excerpt: The subject of mechanical behavior has been in the front line of basic studies in engineering curricula for many years. This textbook was written for engineering students with the aim of presenting, in a relatively simple manner, the basic concepts of mechanical behavior in solid materials. A second aim of the book is to guide students in their laboratory experiments by helping them to understand their observations in parallel with the lectures of their various courses; therefore the first chapter of the book is devoted to mechanical testing. Another aim of the book is to provide practicing engineers with basic help to bridge the gap of time that has passed from their graduation up to their actual involvement in engineering work. The book also serves as the basis for more advanced studies and seminars when pursuing courses on a graduate level. The content of this textbook and the topics discussed correspond to courses that are usually taught in universities and colleges all over the world, but with a different and more modern approach. It is however unique by the inclusion of an extensive chapter on mechanical behavior in the micron and submicron/nanometer range. Mechanical deformation phenomena are explained and often related to the presence of dislocations in structures. Many practical illustrations are provided representing various observations encountered in actual structures of particularly technical significance. A comprehensive list of references at the end of each chapter is included to provide a broad basis for further studying the subject.

Book Synopsis Mechanical Properties and Deformation Behavior of Materials Having Ultra-Fine Microstructures by : Michael Anthony Nastasi

Download or read book Mechanical Properties and Deformation Behavior of Materials Having Ultra-Fine Microstructures written by Michael Anthony Nastasi. This book was released on 1993. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the emerging class of new materials characterized by ultra-fine microstrucures. The NATO ASI which produced this book was the first international scientific meeting devoted to a discussion of the mechanical properties and deformation behavior of materials having grain sizes down to a few nanometers. Topics covered include superplasticity, tribology, and the supermodulus effect. Review chapters cover a variety of other themes including synthesis, characterization, thermodynamic stability, and general physical properties. Much of the work is concerned with the issue of how far conventional techniques and concepts can be extended toward atomic scale probing. Another key issue concerns the structure of nanocrystalline materials, in particular, what is the structure and composition of the internal boundaries. These ultra-fine microstructures have proved to challenge even the finest probes that the materials science community has today.

Book excerpt: div="" style=""This fourth edition focuses on the basics and advanced topics in strength of materials. This is an essential guide to students, as several chapters have been rewritten and their scope has expanded. Four new chapters highlighting combined loadings, unsymmetrical bending and shear centre, fixed beams, and rotating rings, discs and cylinders have been added. New solved examples, multiple choice questions and short answer questions have been added to augment learning. The entire text has been thoroughly revised and updated to eliminate the possible errors left out in the previous editions of the book. This textbook is ideal for the students of Mechanical and Civil Engineering. ^

Book Synopsis Mechanical Properties of Materials at Low Temperatures by : D. Wigley

Download or read book Mechanical Properties of Materials at Low Temperatures written by D. Wigley. This book was released on 2012-12-06. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In writing this monograph, the aim has been to consider the mechanical properties of the wide range of materials now available in such a way as to start with the fundamental nature of these properties and to follow the discussion through to the point at which the reader is able to comprehend the significance or otherwise of the large amounts of data now available in design manuals and other compilations. In short, it is hoped that this volume will be used as a companion to these data compilations and as an aid to their interpretation. In attempting to cover such a wide field, a large degree of selection has been necessary, as complete volumes have been written on topics which here have had to be covered in a few pages or less. It is inevitable that not everyone will agree with the choice made, especially if it is his own subject which has been discussed rather briefly, and the author accepts full res ponsibility for the selection made. The book is written at a level which should be easily followed by a university graduate in science or engineer ing, although, if his background has not included a course in materials science, some groundwork may be lacking.
