This book was released on 2019-01-14. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to build consensus on methods to measure and model soil carbon stocks and stock changes, the Steering Committee of the Livestock Environmental Assessment and Performance (LEAP) Partnership mandated a task force to develop this scoping analysis and pave the way towards the formation of the LEAP Tecnical Advisory Group on soil carbon stock changes. Soil carbon sequestration and storage in grasslands offers a significant potential to compensate for GHG emissions from livestock, but the lack of consensus on the appropriate methodologies to account for soil carbon stock changes hinders robust and standardized assessments. In this report, we reviewed several published soil organic carbon (SOC) models, and evaluated their aptitude to combine them with life cycle assessments (LCAs). Among contentious issues, the most relevant are: a) the lack of universal models, b) the uneven data availability, comparability and quality between countries and regions, and c) the difficulty to match measurable SOC fractions with those determined by the models. Taking this into account, a tiered approach is proposed, according to the availability of original data to run the models. The use of IPCC carbon (C) accounting system appears to be the simplest approach suitable to countries with scarcity of original C data. Conversely, more complex models such as Century (Parton 1987, 1988) or Roth C (Smith 1998) are likely to perform better and give less uncertainty when original input data are easily available.

Book Synopsis Soil Carbon Dynamics in Indian Himalayan Region by : Gaurav Mishra

Download or read book Soil Carbon Dynamics in Indian Himalayan Region written by Gaurav Mishra. This book was released on 2024-01-08. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributed volume assimilates the knowledge, experience, and exciting aspects of soil carbon research in the Indian Himalayan region. It includes different aspects and factors associated with soil carbon sequestration in the region, one of the biodiversity hot spots and highly vulnerable to climatic change impacts. Information on different aspects of soil organic carbon dynamics concerning adaptive land management practices and anthropogenic impacts is covered. Further topics include applying advanced tools and techniques to soil carbon vis-a-vis soil erosion research. This book is of interest to researchers and policymakers involved in soil carbon research and offer ideas to enhance the soil carbon in the region concerned. In addition, the book will provide up-to-date information for researchers interested in soil carbon research for the maintenance of soil quality and fertility in the climate-vulnerable Indian Himalayan region.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Plant-Based Meat Analogs by : Gokare A. Ravishankar

Download or read book Handbook of Plant-Based Meat Analogs written by Gokare A. Ravishankar. This book was released on 2024-05-24. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Handbook of Plant-Based Meat Analogs : Innovation, Technology and Quality presents the growing opportunities and challenges of meat substitutes from plant-based resources. Addressing core topics from source ingredients to consumer acceptance, the book provides a comprehensive starting point for those seeking to explore sustainable meat alternative products. To date, the full potential of plant-based meat products has been underexplored, underutilized, and underrepresented. Plant-based meat analogs provide options for health benefits for vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike. They also offer improved ecological profiles through reduction of greenhouse gases and other environmental impacts. This book provides the most up-to-date information on plant-based meat analogs, sources of ingredients , industrial processes, large scale production, health benefits including the safety and regulatory aspects, and environmental implications. Organizes chapters by sections on types, processing, health benefits, sensory evaluation, and regulatory/safety issues of meat analogs Includes methods and protocols for producing, storing, and evaluating meat analogs Covers meat analogs from plants, grains, nuts, microbes, and more Provides case studies to illustrate concepts and practices

Book Synopsis Global assessment of soil carbon in grasslands by : Dondini, M., Martin, M., De Camillis, C., Uwizeye, A., Soussana, J.-F., Robinson, T., Steinfeld, H.

Download or read book Global assessment of soil carbon in grasslands written by Dondini, M., Martin, M., De Camillis, C., Uwizeye, A., Soussana, J.-F., Robinson, T., Steinfeld, H.. This book was released on 2023-02-14. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soils contribute to the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals through carbon sequestration. By enhancing soil health and fertility, soils can play a crucial role in climate action, land degradation neutrality, and alleviating hunger. The present study provides a spatially explicit report on the state of grassland soils and can be used as a baseline for future work to explore the impacts of livestock management on soil carbon at regional, country and farm levels. Assessing the current state of grassland systems and their potential to sequester carbon in the soil is of key importance to understand the trade-offs between grassland services on food security, biodiversity conservation and climate mitigation.
