Book Synopsis Mathematics Motivated by the Social and Behavioral Sciences by : Donald G. Saari

Download or read book Mathematics Motivated by the Social and Behavioral Sciences written by Donald G. Saari. This book was released on 2018-02-06. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mathematical challenges coming from the social and behavioral sciences differ significantly from typical applied mathematical concerns. ?Change,? for instance, is ubiquitous, but without knowing the fundamental driving force, standard differential and iterative methods are not appropriate. Although differing forms of aggregation are widely used, a general mathematical assessment of potential pitfalls is missing. These realities provide opportunities to create new mathematical approaches. These themes are described in an introductory, expository, and accessible manner by exploring new ways to handle dynamics and evolutionary game theory, to identify subtleties of decision and voting methods, to recognize unexpected modeling concerns, and to introduce new approaches with which to examine game theory. Applications range from avoiding undesired consequences when designing policy to identifying unanticipated voting (where the ?wrong? person could win), nonparametric statistical, and economic ?supply and demand? properties.

Book Synopsis Attitudes, Beliefs, Motivation and Identity in Mathematics Education by : Markku S. Hannula

Download or read book Attitudes, Beliefs, Motivation and Identity in Mathematics Education written by Markku S. Hannula. This book was released on 2016-06-14. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book records the state of the art in research on mathematics-related affect. It discusses the concepts and theories of mathematics-related affect along the lines of three dimensions. The first dimension identifies three broad categories of affect: motivation, emotions, and beliefs. The book contains one chapter on motivation, including discussions on how emotions and beliefs relate to motivation. There are two chapters that focus on beliefs and a chapter on attitude which cross-cuts through all these categories. The second dimension covers a rapidly fluctuating state to a more stable trait. All chapters in the book focus on trait-type affect and the chapter on motivation discusses both these dimensions. The third dimension regards the three main levels of theorizing: physiological (embodied), psychological (individual) and social. All chapters reflect that mathematics-related affect has mainly been studied using psychological theories.

Book Synopsis The Cahn–Hilliard Equation: Recent Advances and Applications by : Alain Miranville

Download or read book The Cahn–Hilliard Equation: Recent Advances and Applications written by Alain Miranville. This book was released on 2019-09-09. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to present a detailed discussion of both classical and recent results on the popular Cahn–Hilliard equation and some of its variants. The focus is on mathematical analysis of Cahn–Hilliard models, with an emphasis on thermodynamically relevant logarithmic nonlinear terms, for which several questions are still open. Initially proposed in view of applications to materials science, the Cahn–Hilliard equation is now applied in many other areas, including image processing, biology, ecology, astronomy, and chemistry. In particular, the author addresses applications to image inpainting and tumor growth. Many chapters include open problems and directions for future research. The Cahn-Hilliard Equation: Recent Advances and Applications is intended for graduate students and researchers in applied mathematics, especially those interested in phase separation models and their generalizations and applications to other fields. Materials scientists also will find this text of interest.

Book excerpt: This Encyclopedia is the first attempt in a generation to map the social and behavioral sciences on a grand scale. Not since the publication in 1968 of the International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences, edited by David L. Sills, has there been such an ambitious project to describe the state of the art in all the fields encompassed within the social and behavioral sciences. Available in both print (26 volumes) and online editions, it comprises 4,000 articles, commissioned by 52 Section Editors, and includes 90,000 bibliographic references as well as comprehensive name and subject indexes.

Book Synopsis Essential Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences by : Gregory J. Privitera

Download or read book Essential Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences written by Gregory J. Privitera. This book was released on 2024. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In earlier editions, I opened the preface by highlighting that, "statistics is not something static or antiquated that we used to do in times past; statistics is an ever-evolving discipline with relevance to our daily lives" (Privitera, 2012, 2015, 2018, p. xxvii in all editions). In this spirit, and true to the foundational philosophical approach of this text, the third edition includes substantive changes that reflect an adaptive culture of analysis and interpretation in the social and behavioral sciences. Initially, on the basis of years of experience and student feedback, I was inspired to write a book that instructors could truly teach from-one that relates statistics to science using current, practical research examples and one that is approachable (and dare I say interesting!) to students. I wrote this book in that spirit- to introduce students to statistics as a way of understanding the world around them and encouraging students to be critical consumers of the information they come across each day. This book, more than ever in the third edition, emphasizes the ongoing spirit of discovery that emerges using today's resources and technologies to record, manage, analyze, and interpret data that is reported everywhere from online and print articles to the peer-reviewed scientific literature. The value and rationale for changes in the third edition that embody the philosophical approach of this book are discussed under the New to This Edition heading in this preface. What follows here are key features and pedagogy that promote student learning, make sense of difficult material, connect content across chapters, and build upon the philosophical approach in this book to promote student learning, instill an ongoing spirit of discovery in the sciences, integrate recent advances in our understanding of statistics and analysis, and encourage students to be critical consumers of the information they come across each day"--
