Book excerpt: In this “forensic, unflinching, devastating work of historical recovery” (Sathnam Sanghera), Bud Dajo—an American atrocity bigger than Wounded Knee or My Lai, yet today largely forgotten—is revealed, thanks to the rediscovery of a single photograph. In March 1906, American soldiers on the island of Jolo in the southern Philippines surrounded and killed 1000 local men, women, and children, known as Moros, on top of an extinct volcano. The so-called ‘Battle of Bud Dajo’ was hailed as a triumph over an implacable band of dangerous savages, a “brilliant feat of arms” according to President Theodore Roosevelt. Some contemporaries, including W.E.B. Du Bois and Mark Twain, saw the massacre for what it was, but they were the exception and the U.S. military authorities successfully managed to bury the story. Despite the fact that the slaughter of Moros had been captured on camera, the memory of the massacre soon disappeared from the historical record. In Massacre in the Clouds, Kim A. Wagner meticulously recovers the history of a forgotten atrocity and the remarkable photograph that exposed its grim logic. His vivid, unsparing account of the massacre—which claimed hundreds more lives than Wounded Knee and My Lai combined—reveals the extent to which practices of colonial warfare and violence, derived from European imperialism, were fully embraced by Americans with catastrophic results.

Book Synopsis South of the Clouds by : Seth Faison

Download or read book South of the Clouds written by Seth Faison. This book was released on 2007-04-01. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South of the Clouds offers a fascinating, intimate portrait of China by telling the story of an American man who ventures into its hidden realms---romance, politics, the criminal underworld, and Tibet. As he matures from a wide-eyed student into a journalist and a seasoned observer, he develops a passion for uncovering secrets, about China and about himself. The author navigates his way past forbidding walls to peek inside the dark corners of Chinese society, relying on a remarkable collection of friends and acquaintances who help guide the way: an embittered policeman in Xian, a gay professor in Shanghai, and a Buddhist monk in Tibet, who presides at an ancient burial ritual where the corpse is carved up and fed to wild vultures. The Tiananmen Square massacre, people smuggling, and the Falun Gong movement are among the political and social upheavals that the author explains as he witnesses China's uncertain road toward capitalism and its place in the modern world. Along his travels, the author wrestles with his own cultural identity, his sexuality, and his spiritual bearings. He finds an erotic outlet in the Chinese "Sauna Massage" and a stirring emotional connection with Jin Xing, a brilliant choreographer and China's first openly transsexual citizen. Ultimately, he discovers the answer to lifelong questions on a mountaintop in Tibet. Seth Faison, with a subtle understanding of Chinese culture, brings past and present events to life in a thought-provoking account of this mysterious nation and its people.

Book excerpt: Dauphin Island, AL: Three college students arrive at Jason Summers' beach house for the last big party of the season. Nausea strikes hard before the first shot of Tequila is ever poured: blood, everywhere. They have found the bodies. Reporters and politicos scramble for position. Three of the victims belong to the Beautiful People: a smooth entrepreneur, a Beauty Queen, a News Anchor. The fourth, Rebecca Jordan, is forgotten in the frenzy that surrounds the killings. Rebecca's mother, disgusted by the desecration of her daughter's memory, seeks help from Private Investigator Jack Delmas. He reluctantly accepts, and soon finds that appearances are not what they seem in this quaint community. Beneath its surface lies a netherworld peopled by debauched jet-setters, international smugglers, and cunning, unpredictable murderers. It is a world where innocence can be swallowed whole, and where the best intentions of people like Rebecca Jordan can distort into grisly bloodbaths like the one that consumed her. To win justice for Rebecca, Delmas allies with Jimbo McInnis, an oversized, fast-living, Hemingway-quoting deputy sheriff. Together, they must delve behind the madness to find the truth. Doing so may cost them more than their reputations.
