Book excerpt: African swine fever (ASF) is a disease with a mortality rate close to 100 percent. There is no vaccine and no conventional treatment against the disease. To reduce the effects caused by ASF outbreaks, optimal response mechanisms against probable ASF emergency disease situations need to be planned and rehearsed so that the disease can be controlled and eradicated in the most rapid and cost-effective way. These plans should be refined from time to time through simulation exercises and personnel should be trained in their individual roles and responsibilities. This manual provides information on the nature of ASF, and on the principles of, and strategic options for its prevention, control and elimination. Guidelines are given for individual countries threatened by ASF to formulate their own national policy on control and eradication of a possible incursion of the disease. The manual identifies both personnel and equipment and other facilities that are needed in a national ASF contingency plan. An outline of the suggested format and contents of a national contingency plan is also provided as a guide, which can be modified to suit the needs and circumstances of individual countries.

The disease slashes milk production and may lead sterility in bulls and fertility problems in females. It damages hides, and causes death due to secondary bacterial infections. Although traditionally limited to sub-Saharan Africa, LSD has slowly been invading new territories such as the Middle East and Turkey, and since 2015, most of the Balkan countries, the Caucasus and the Russian Federation, where the disease continues to spread and the risk of an imminent incursion into other unaffected countries, is very high. Veterinarians, cattle farmers, and others along the value chain are facing the disease for first time and are unfamiliar with LSD’s clinical presentation, its transmission routes and the available prevention and control options. This manual aims to fill these gaps by providing veterinary professionals and paraprofessionals with the in formation they need to promptly diagnose and react to an outbreak of LSD. Cattle farmers will also benefit from reading it.

Other Chapters in the General Medicine chapters have been revised and the sections on gastrointestinal disease of horses and the chapters on respiratory system and hemopoietic and lymphatic systemes have been totally re-written by Dr Hinchcliff. The specific diseases of large animal species have been updated sine the last edition by all authors but of particular note in this Special Medicine section is the contributions of three new contributing authors. Dr Stan Done, an internationally recognized authority on diseases of pigs, has taken responsibility for the diseases of this species throughout the text, and adds a European input to the text. Dr Gary Osweiler, a well recognised clinical diagnostic toxicologist, has taken the responsibility for the revision of the topics on toxicological diseases and Dr Douglas Colwell, the diseases associated with arthropod parasites. In keeping with current diseases and their importance there is a new chapter on diseases associated with prions. This section has been completely revised and descriptions of many of the diseases of current importance completely re-written. There is a new chapter on diseases associated with prions. Includes important information essential to any large-animal veterinarian, especially those working with horses, cattle, sheep, pigs, or goats. User-friendly format allows the reader to quickly absorb key information. Quick review/synopsis sections for complex diseases make important information easy to find.
