Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manifold Witness for Christ, Vol. 1 It is certain, as a matter of fact, that the Christianity of the mass of men is received by inheritance and teaching, and tested first by practical experience, and then by simple study of the Gospel in itself. I contend not only that this is perfectly reasonable, but that by no other method could Christianity, in accordance with the laws of human nature and experience, hope to assert for itself anything like a universal sway. But when this natural process is chal lenged to justify itself by reason, it appears to me that Christian thought generally passes through the two phases which I have attempted to Sketch in the first and second parts of this volume. I. Christianity obviously presents herself as the chief re presentative of Supernatural Religion', probably the only representative who has any chance of a hearing. The first question which suggests itself to most men on hearing her claim, is the question of the relation in which the Gospel stands to the conclusions and doubts of Natural Religion.' Can it do anything to strengthen the one, and to dispel the other In answer to that question I have endeavoured to Show that here, as in all other cases, the Supernatural is not Preternatural.' Tracing the gradual development in the Bible of the full Christian doctrine, under the pervading idea of Covenant with God, ' I have contended that, in relation to the three fundamental points of religion, the personality of God, the Spirituality of man, and the solution of the mystery of evil, Christianity accords at all points with the main principles of Natural Religion; but at the same time confirms in the calmness of absolute certitude the modest inductions of Natural Theology, and supplements them, when they are silent or speak with stammering tongue. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Testament of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Vol. 1 The prophecies also of our Lord and of his apostles, interspersed, as we shall see, through the books of the several writers of the New Testament, and fulfilled through all succeeding ages, form a demonstration of its divine authority, which gathers clearness and energy by revolving centuries. A variety of other proofs, external and internal, might be mentioned: but these hints may here suffice to show, that the New Testament stands on its own basis; and not merely on the ground of the Old Testament, as some have assumed. Book Synopsis The New Testament of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, Vol. 1 by : Adam Clarke

Download or read book The New Testament of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, Vol. 1 written by Adam Clarke. This book was released on 2018-01-23. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Testament of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, Vol. 1: The Text in the Authorized Translation: With a Commentary and Critical Notes; The Gospel and Acts In performing the duty committed to him, the editor has found himself, in nearly all cases, so entirely in sympathy, as well as in intellectual accord, with the original work, that he has seldom been tempted to either amend or suppress any of its utterances. Though he was afres thinker. In the true senses Of that phrase, and strictly loyal to the truth, yet the author of this great commentary was evidently a firm and warmly attached believer in all the great doctrines of the Gospel as a supernaturally derived system Of religious truth. He accepted the Bible as the word of God, itself the revelation Of Jesus Christ, in whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge; and he brought to its study, in which he recognised the indispensable need of the illumination and instruction of the Holy Spirit, all the aids of true learning, as well as the arbitrament of sanctified reason. Confessing the value of patristic learning, and the qualified authority of ancient ecclesiastical judgments, and deferring in due degree to the con census of the orthodoxy Of the ages, he still claimed for the written word, the Bible as it has come down to us, that which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled of the word of life, as in itself the sole sufiicient guide in all matters of faith and duty. And, properly to apprehend the truth contained in those writings, all the powers of the duly enlightened under standing must be used. Criticism, and not authority, must therefore determine every question Of the canon, of inspiration, and of exegesis; and whatever cannot endure the searching light of a spiritually-rational criticism has no authority in the school of biblical interpretation. In this spirit this great work was originally written; and to preserve that spirit has been a ruling purpose in its revisal. And with humble reliance upon the presence and the illumination of the Spirit, by whom the word was given, with those who may peruse these pages, and cov eting for them a share of the light and comfort that have accompanied the labour of its preparation, the work is now devoutly committed to that Divine Power who always attends even the feeblest efiorts made in his name and for the furtherance of his kingdom and glory. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bible Witness and Review, Vol. 3: For the Presentation and Defence of Revealed Truth Restoration to a condition of innocence, such as Adam and Eve have alone known upon earth, is clearly impossible. By the fall the knowledge of good and evil was acquired, and man got a nature which is enmity against God (Rom. viii. 7). Continuance for ever in the condition spiritual and physical, which was engendered by the fall, would be dreadful to contemplate. Yet deliverance from it by his own power is what man can never achieve. Redemption, therefore, becomes a necessity, if the consequences of the fall are not always to be experienced by members of the race of Adam. For creatures we are, called into being at the will of the Creator, each alike possessing a soul that never dies, which dwells, whilst the man is upon earth, in a body which never can be annihilated. Were redemption unheard of, how truly wretched would be our prospect! Were it impossible, how had the enemy triumphed, by involving in ruin inevitable the whole race of beings, on the head of which God the Creator had once looked, and saw that it was very good (Gen. i. 31)! But the Bible treats of redemption by the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ, and assures all who believe on Him that they share in it already (Ephes. i. 7; Col. i. 14), even the forgiveness of sins, whilst awaiting that exercise of divine power, which will effect the redemption of their bodies (Rom. viii. 23), The subject, then, is one of great importance and of world-wide interest, since it concerns Israel, Jerusalem, our souls, our bodies, and the purchased possession, to the enjoyment of which, with the Lord Jesus Christ, believers are taught to look forward (Ephes. i. 14, iv. 30). Book Synopsis The Gospel of Matthew, Vol. 1 by : A. C. Gaebelein

Download or read book The Gospel of Matthew, Vol. 1 written by A. C. Gaebelein. This book was released on 2016-06-27. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel of Matthew, Vol. 1: An Exposition The instrument chosen by the Holy Spirit to write this Gospel was Matthew. He was a Jew. However, he did not belong to the religious, educated class, to the scribes; but he belonged to the class which was most bitterly hated. He was a publican, that is a tax gatherer. The Roman govern ment had appointed officials whose duty it was to have the legal tax gathered, and these officials, mostly, if not all Gen tiles, appointed the actual collectors, who were generally Jews. Only the most unscrupulous among the Jews would hire themselves out for the sake of gain to the avowedenemy of Jerusalem. Wherever there was still a ray of hope for Messiah's coming, the Jew would naturally shrink from being associated with the Gentiles, who were to be swept away from the land with the coming of the King. For this reason the tax gatherers, being Roman employees, were hated by the Jews even more bitterly than the Gentiles themselves. Such a hated tax gatherer was the writer of the first Gospel. How the grace of God is revealed in his call we shall see later. That he was chosen to write this first Gospel is in itself significant, for it speaks of a new order of things about to be introduced, namely, the call of the despised Gentiles.
