Book Synopsis Machine Learning-driven Patient-specific Early Seizure Detection for Neuromodulation Devices by : Jamie Michael Koerner

Download or read book Machine Learning-driven Patient-specific Early Seizure Detection for Neuromodulation Devices written by Jamie Michael Koerner. This book was released on 2020. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Epilepsy is a chronic disorder of the brain that predisposes individuals to experiencing recurrent and unprovoked seizures affecting 50 million people worldwide. Recent advances in fundamental neuroscience and implantable electronics have enabled the development of neuromodulation devices for the treatment of epilepsy. Modern neuromodulation devices detect abnormal electrical activity in the brain associated with seizures and activate electrical stimulation to prevent seizures from occurring. Today, there is a growing trend towards integrating machine learning for seizure detection on such devices to improve their efficacy. This thesis assesses the suitability of current machine learning models for neuromodulation devices by evaluating their seizure detection performance and efficiency in resource-constrained environments. Particular emphasis is placed on comparing traditional machine learning to modern deep learning models. This thesis will show that, in the seizure detection context, deep learning models can be implemented in a compact and resource-efficient way despite their computational complexity.

Book Synopsis Epilepsy and Brain Tumors by : Herbert B. Newton

Download or read book Epilepsy and Brain Tumors written by Herbert B. Newton. This book was released on 2015-03-06. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Patients with brain tumor-related epilepsy (BTRE) suffer from two serious pathologies simultaneously – a brain tumor and a secondary form of epilepsy. Although there has been remarkable progress in BTRE research in recent years, it remains an on-going challenge for clinicians and continues to stimulate much debate in the scientific community. This volume is the first to be completely dedicated to BTRE, and in doing so it explores issues faced by the health care team as well as some of the novel and promising directions that future research may take. Epilepsy and Brain Tumors is not only a complete reference on BTRE but also a practical guide based on clinical experiences, with a comprehensive collection of presentations from international experts who share some of the latest discoveries and their approaches to tackling a wide range of difficult and complex issues. - Includes coverage of epidemiology, pathology and treatment of both primary and metastatic brain tumors - Offers additional insight into supportive care, incidence in children, focal epileptogenesis, clinical evaluation, antiepileptic drugs, surgical treatment, cognitive rehabilitation, and more - Chapters authored and edited by leaders in the field around the globe – the broadest, most expert coverage available

Book Synopsis Connectomic Deep Brain Stimulation by : Andreas Horn

Download or read book Connectomic Deep Brain Stimulation written by Andreas Horn. This book was released on 2021-09-10. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Connectomic Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) covers this highly efficacious treatment option for movement disorders such as Parkinson's Disease, Essential Tremor and Dystonia. The book examines its impact on distributed brain networks that span across the human brain in parallel with modern-day neuroimaging concepts and the connectomics of the brain. It asks several questions, including which cortical areas should DBS electrodes be connected in order to generate the highest possible clinical improvement? Which connections should be avoided? Could these connectomic insights be used to better understand the mechanism of action of DBS? How can they be transferred to individual patients, and more. This book is suitable for neuroscientists, neurologists and functional surgeons studying DBS. It provides practical advice on processing strategies and theoretical background, highlighting and reviewing the current state-of-the-art in connectomic surgery. - Written to provide a "hands-on" approach for neuroscience graduate students, as well as medical personnel from the fields of neurology and neurosurgery - Includes preprocessing strategies (such as co-registration, normalization, lead localization, VTA estimation and fiber-tracking approaches) - Presents references (key articles, books and protocols) for additional detailed study - Provides data analysis boxes in each chapter to help with data interpretation
