Book Synopsis Taste of Macau by : Annabel Jackson

Download or read book Taste of Macau written by Annabel Jackson. This book was released on 2003-09-01. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over 450 years ago, the Portuguese landed in what was to be the first European colony in Asia, Macau, bringing their culture and their cuisine. This lavishly illustrated cookbook is the first to introduce to the English-speaking world one of the oldest ‘fusion’ cuisines in Asia. It includes 62 recipes, most of which are straight from the source — old family recipe collections or the files of influential Macanese chefs. This book comes at an important time — just after the handover in 1999 of Macau from Portuguese to Chinese rule — a time when most of the Portuguese community is leaving Macau and authentic Macanese culture and way of life seems doomed to rapidly disappear. Thus, this book is much more than a cookbook — it is a project to preserve and share, for the first time, a very important aspect of the Macanese world. The author has spent almost ten years collecting and testing these heritage recipes, getting in touch with the Macanese diaspora, and asking them to reflect back and write about food in Macau. Taste of Macau can be used as a complete reference guide to Macanese cuisine, as it includes information on ingredients and where to buy them, stories and information about the few remaining authentic restaurants in Macau, and a fascinating discussion on the relationship between food and culture through literary excerpts and personal testimonies from important figures in the Macanese community.

Book Synopsis Macau, China by : Steve Shipp

Download or read book Macau, China written by Steve Shipp. This book was released on 1997. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On December 20, 1999, Portugal was formally handed over Macau to China, ending 442 years of Portuguese control of the tiny peninsula and two small islands. Though comprised of just over nine square miles (with new reclamation), Macau was once one of the world's most important trading ports. In recent years, Macau has become a vital alternative to Hong Kong as a gateway to the booming economy of the People's Republic of China. Macau is first examined from a historical perspective. The island's responses to World War ll, the Korean War and China's civil war are fully covered, as is the influence of China's Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution. The secret agreements between China and Portugal in the 1960s and 1970s are described, along with a full accounting of the arrangement for the return of Macau to China. The prospects for the island's future under Chinese control are then detailed.

Book Synopsis Macau History and Society by : Zhidong Hao

Download or read book Macau History and Society written by Zhidong Hao. This book was released on 2011-01-01. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Macau History and Society illuminates the early Portuguese maritime exploration along China's south coast, political and economic development in Macau, and current social problems. The book makes significant contributions to a political sociology of Macau, emphasizing how different civilizations and cultures interacted with one another, and explores how a new Macau identity can be constructed. Democratization has been a never-ending process in Macau since the 1500's. Macau's experience indicates that sovereignty has been shared rather than exclusive. Although civilizations and cultures do clash, they also cooperate. But the Macau model is deeply flawed - Hao contends that Macau needs to build a new multicultural identity, and a cosmopolitan political and economic identity.

Book Synopsis Sovereignty at the Edge by : Cathryn H. Clayton

Download or read book Sovereignty at the Edge written by Cathryn H. Clayton. This book was released on 2020-03-17. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "How have conceptions and practices of sovereignty shaped how Chineseness is imagined? This ethnography addresses this question through the example of Macau, a southern Chinese city that was a Portuguese colony from the 1550s until 1999. As the Portuguese administration prepared to transfer Macau to Chinese control, it mounted a campaign to convince the city’s residents, 95 percent of whom identified as Chinese, that they possessed a “unique cultural identity” that made them different from other Chinese, and that resulted from the existence of a Portuguese state on Chinese soil. This attempt sparked reflections on the meaning of Portuguese governance that challenged not only conventional definitions of sovereignty but also conventional notions of Chineseness as a subjectivity common to all Chinese people around the world. Various stories about sovereignty and Chineseness and their interrelationship were told in Macau in the 1990s. This book is about those stories and how they informed the lives of Macau residents in ways that allowed different relationships among sovereignty, subjectivity, and culture to become thinkable, while also providing a sense of why, at times, it may not be desirable to think them."
