Book Synopsis Love and the Dignity of Human Life by : Robert Spaemann

Download or read book Love and the Dignity of Human Life written by Robert Spaemann. This book was released on 2012-01-09. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to love someone? What does the concept of human dignity mean, and what are its consequences? What marks the end of a person's life? Is personhood more than consciousness? These perplexing questions lurk beneath the surface of everyday life, surfacing only to demand urgent attention in crises. Renowned German philosopher Robert Spaemann addresses these and other foundational enigmas in three eloquent short essays. Speaking wisdom to controversy, he offers carefully considered, novel approaches to key philosophical and theological questions about the nature of human love ("The Paradoxes of Love"), dignity ("Human Dignity and Human Nature"), and death ("Is Brain Death the Death of a Human Person?").

Book Synopsis Dignity as a Human Right? by : George P. Smith

Download or read book Dignity as a Human Right? written by George P. Smith. This book was released on 2018-11-27. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dignity is seen, commonly, as an ethical obligation owed to human persons. The dimensions of this obligation are subject to wide discussion and defy universal agreement. Dignity is seen, commonly, as an ethical obligation owed to human persons. Dignity as a Human Right? examines dignity within the prism of death, and more particularly, its humane and dignified management. Although there is no domestic or international right to die with dignity, within the right to life should, arguably, be a right to dignity and self-determination especially at its end-stage; for, a powerful interface exists between the right to human dignity and the very right to life, to love and humanity as well as compassion at its conclusion. Legislative efforts--nationally and internationally--have begun to recognize a right to die with dignity when a condition of medical futility exists. There are presently five states and the District of Columbia, together with a judicial interpretation from the Montana Supreme Court, which recognize death assistance for the terminally ill. Internationally, Canada, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Switzerland are seen as leaders in this recognition. The United Nations has played a significant role in framing end-of-life decision making within the ambit of human rights protection. The UN Charter states unequivocally that the dignity and worth of the human person must be protected and safeguarded. Similarly, among other instruments, the Universal Declaration on Human Rights acknowledges that all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.

Book Synopsis The Nature and Dignity of Love by : William Saint Thierry

Download or read book The Nature and Dignity of Love written by William Saint Thierry. This book was released on 2016-10-27. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The will grows into love, love becomes charity, and charity develops into wisdom." This is one of many gems in this book. "The love which we owe God is fourfold and entire. In that He says He will be loved 'with all thy heart', He demands our will. 'Will all thy strength' implies the virtue of charity, and 'with all thy mind' means the enjoyment of wisdom. It is the will itself which first moves the soul towards God, and love carries it onward. Charity contemplates Him and wisdom enjoys Him."
