Book Synopsis Local Probing of a Superconductor’s Quasiparticles and Bosonic Excitations with a Scanning Tunnelling Microscope by : Gozlinski, Thomas

Download or read book Local Probing of a Superconductor’s Quasiparticles and Bosonic Excitations with a Scanning Tunnelling Microscope written by Gozlinski, Thomas. This book was released on 2023-03-24. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Complementary to scattering techniques, scanning tunnelling microscopy provides atomic-scale real space information about a material's electronic state of matter. State-of-the-art designs of a scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) allow measurements at millikelvin temperatures with unprecedented energy resolution. Therefore, this instrument excels in probing the superconducting state at low temperatures and especially its local quasiparticle excitations as well as bosonic degrees of freedom.

Book Synopsis Quantum Tunneling of Josephson Vortices in High-Impedance Long Junctions by : Wildermuth, Matthias Micha

Download or read book Quantum Tunneling of Josephson Vortices in High-Impedance Long Junctions written by Wildermuth, Matthias Micha. This book was released on 2023-09-11. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last decades, superconducting devices have emerged as a promising platform for quantum technologies, including quantum sensing and quantum computing. Their key elements are Josephson junctions, which allow for coherent supercurrent tunneling between two weakly linked superconductors. If such a junction is extended in one direction to a long junction, the superconducting phase difference can vary in space and time and may allow for quantized phase windings that drive supercurrent vortices.

Download or read book Josephson Scanning Tunneling Microscopy -- a Local and Direct Probe of the Superconducting Order Parameter written by . This book was released on 2009. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Direct measurements of the superconducting superfluid on the surface of vacuum-cleaved Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta (BSCCO) samples are reported. These measurements are accomplished via Josephson tunneling into the sample using a novel scanning tunneling microscope (STM) equipped with a superconducting tip. The spatial resolution of the STM of lateral distances less than the superconducting coherence length allows it to reveal local inhomogeneities in the pair wavefunction of the BSCCO. Instrument performance is demonstrated first with Josephson measurements of Pb films followed by the layered superconductor NbSe2. The relevant measurement parameter, the Josephson ICRN product, is discussed within the context of both BCS superconductors and the high transition temperature superconductors. The local relationship between the ICRN product and the quasiparticle density of states (DOS) gap are presented within the context of phase diagrams for BSCCO. Excessive current densities can be produced with these measurements and have been found to alter the local DOS in the BSCCO. Systematic studies of this effect were performed to determine the practical measurement limits for these experiments. Alternative methods for preparation of the BSCCO surface are also discussed.

Book Synopsis Introduction to Unconventional Superconductivity by : V.P. Mineev

Download or read book Introduction to Unconventional Superconductivity written by V.P. Mineev. This book was released on 1999-09-21. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unconventional superconductivity (or superconductivity with a nontrivial Cooper pairing) is believed to exist in many heavy-fermion materials as well as in high temperature superconductors, and is a subject of great theoretical and experimental interest. The remarkable progress achieved in this field has not been reflected in published monographs and textbooks, and there is a gap between current research and the standard education of solid state physicists in the theory of superconductivity. This book is intended to meet this information need and includes the authors' original results.
