Book Synopsis LED Lighting by : T. Q. Khan

Download or read book LED Lighting written by T. Q. Khan. This book was released on 2015-02-09. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Promoting the design, application and evaluation of visually and electrically effective LED light sources and luminaires for general indoor lighting as well as outdoor and vehicle lighting, this book combines the knowledge of LED lighting technology with human perceptual aspects for lighting scientists and engineers. After an introduction to the human visual system and current radiometry, photometry and color science, the basics of LED chip and phosphor technology are described followed by specific issues of LED radiometry and the optical, thermal and electric modeling of LEDs. This is supplemented by the relevant practical issues of pulsed LEDs, remote phosphor LEDs and the aging of LED light sources. Relevant human visual aspects closely related to LED technology are described in detail for the photopic and the mesopic range of vision, including color rendering, binning, whiteness, Circadian issues, as well as flicker perception, brightness, visual performance, conspicuity and disability glare. The topic of LED luminaires is discussed in a separate chapter, including retrofit LED lamps, LED-based road and street luminaires and LED luminaires for museum and school lighting. Specific sections are devoted to the modularity of LED luminaires, their aging and the planning and evaluation methods of new LED installations. The whole is rounded off by a summary and a look towards future developments.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Advanced Lighting Technology by : Robert Karlicek

Download or read book Handbook of Advanced Lighting Technology written by Robert Karlicek. This book was released on 2016-05-08. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Handbook of Advanced Lighting Technology is a major reference work on the subject of light source science and technology, with particular focus on solid-state light sources – LEDs and OLEDs – and the development of 'smart' or 'intelligent' lighting systems; and the integration of advanced light sources, sensors, and adaptive control architectures to provide tailored illumination which is 'fit to purpose.' The concept of smart lighting goes hand-in-hand with the development of solid-state light sources, which offer levels of control not previously available with conventional lighting systems. This has impact not only at the scale of the individual user, but also at an environmental and wider economic level. These advances have enabled and motivated significant research activity on the human factors of lighting, particularly related to the impact of lighting on healthcare and education, and the Handbook provides detailed reviews of work in these areas. The potential applications for smart lighting span the entire spectrum of technology, from domestic and commercial lighting, to breakthroughs in biotechnology, transportation, and light-based wireless communication. Whilst most current research globally is in the field of solid-state lighting, there is renewed interest in the development of conventional and non-conventional light sources for specific applications. This Handbook comprehensively reviews the basic physical principles and device technologies behind all light source types and includes discussion of the state-of-the-art. The book essentially breaks down into five major sections: Section 1: The physics, materials, and device technology of established, conventional, and emerging light sources, Section 2: The science and technology of solid-state (LED and OLED) light sources, Section 3: Driving, sensing and control, and the integration of these different technologies under the concept of smart lighting, Section 4: Human factors and applications, Section 5: Environmental and economic factors and implications

Book Synopsis Lengthening the Day by : Brian Bowers

Download or read book Lengthening the Day written by Brian Bowers. This book was released on 1998. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People have always wanted light, and until the nineteenth century the only useful source of light was flame. Electricity brought clean light without flame, and sometimes even without much heat. This book is about the ways in which people have made light to lengthen their day. It explains howoil lamps, candles, and gas lights work and, drawing on writings of the time, shows how the available lights affected daily life. The principles of all the main types of electric lights now available are described. Alongside this technical history, quotations from Aristophanes to Jane Austen, fromJames Boswell to Kenneth Grahame, illustrate the social importance of lighting.

Book Synopsis Brilliant! by : Bob Johnstone

Download or read book Brilliant! written by Bob Johnstone. This book was released on 2015. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published to celebrate the awarding of the 2014 Nobel Prize in physics to Shuji Nakumura, this newly revised edition of a 2007 book profiles the gifted Japanese engineer who is largely responsible for the coming revolution in lighting technology. He came out of nowhere to stun the world with his announcement that he had created the last piece in the puzzle needed for manufacturing solid-state white lights. The invention of this holy-grail product, which promises to make Edison's light bulb obsolete, had eluded the best minds at the top electronic firms for twenty-five years. Thanks to Nakamura's work, the technology of light emitting diodes (LEDs) is ready for widespread implementation. Its impacts will include a reduction in energy consumption for electric lighting by up to 80 percent. This revised edition contains a new preface and an afterword that summarizes Nakamura's most recent accomplishments. In 2008, he and two other scientists founded a company called Soraa (which means sky in Japanese). In 2012, the firm debuted a new technology, based on improved crystal growth (using a technique pioneered by Shuji). It enables second-generation LEDs that are much smaller, more energy-efficient, produce better color, and most likely will replace halogen lights. Besides the Nobel Prize, Nakamura is also the winner of the prestigious $1.5 million Millennium Technology Prize and Japan's Order of Culture Award. Veteran technology writer Bob Johnstone is the first Western journalist to meet and interview Nakamura and he has received the brilliant engineer's full cooperation through a series of exclusive interviews given for the book.
