Book excerpt: What is the probability of your operations achieving the desired profitability? What role does flexibility play in your business plans? Have you ever considered its value in concrete terms? Being able to react to the unexpected by taking a strategic change of course can prove to be the salvation of a company and its leaders. Flexibility, risk, probability and their interrelated value are the key components of Dynamic Decision Management (DDM), a breakthrough approach to validating your decision making process and ensuring the desired results. Using the DDM approach, the well-known and widely accepted complex methods involving scenario building become obsolete. Why? Because DDM does the unthinkable: It integrates the influence of uncertainty and entrepreneurial flexibility in the strategic decision making process and does so with precision.

Book Synopsis The Role of Resource Flexibility in Leveraging Strategic Resources by : James G. Combs

Download or read book The Role of Resource Flexibility in Leveraging Strategic Resources written by James G. Combs. This book was released on 2011. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent advances in resource-based theory suggest that the ways managers use strategic actions to leverage resources has important influences on firms' resulting competitive advantages. However, theory dealing with the nature of leveraging remains underdeveloped. We develop the notion that strategic actions that successfully leverage one resource might not leverage another resource. In particular, our theorizing distinguishes between flexible resources that can be leveraged in new markets and rigid resources that must be leveraged in their current market. Using data from the restaurant industry, we find evidence that top management team experience (a flexible resource) can be profitably leveraged by franchising, but that attempting to leverage specific knowledge (a rigid resource) through either franchising or multi-chaining weakens performance. Our theory and results help explain how different types of resources can be leveraged using different strategic actions.

Book Synopsis Adaptive Action by : Glenda H. Eoyang

Download or read book Adaptive Action written by Glenda H. Eoyang. This book was released on 2013-04-17. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rooted in the study of chaos and complexity, Adaptive Action introduces a simple, common sense process that will guide you and your organization into reflective action. This elegant method prompts readers to engage with three deceptively simple questions: What? So what? Now what? The first leads to careful observation. The second invites you to thoughtfully consider options and implications. The third ignites effective action. Together, these questions and the tools that support them produce a dynamic and creative dance with uncertainty. The road-tested steps of adaptive action can be used to devise solutions and improve performance across multiple challenges, and they have proven to be scalable from individuals to work groups, from organizations to communities. In addition to laying out the adaptive action framework and clear protocols to support it, Glenda H. Eoyang and Royce J. Holladay introduce best practices from exemplary professionals who have used adaptive action to meet personal, professional, and political challenges in leadership, consulting, Alzheimer's treatment, evaluation, education reform, political advocacy, and cultural engagement—readying readers to employ this new toolkit to meet their own goals with a sense of ingenuity and flexibility.
