Book excerpt: In the book, Leadership, Violence and School Climate: Case Studies in Creating Non-Violent Schools, three important themes are emphasized namely, democratic leadership, violence and school climate. The book recognizes that safety should be the first issue of concern when addressing school violence. However, violence in schools should not be the sole concern of outside experts who advocate for lock downs, metal detectors and bullet proof glass. Through democratic school leadership violence can be reduced by those professionals actually working in schools. The book emphasizes that reduction in school violence originates from school leaders having a comprehensive understanding of the climate found in schools. Leadership, violence and school climate are connected through the use of democratic principles that address; crisis, trauma, empowerment, common ground, critical thinking, assertiveness and others. The book points out how schools can reverse their reactionary stance to violence, and become pro-active through the practice of democratic principles.

Download or read book Leadership Against School Violence written by Dr Gus Frias. This book was released on 2012-09. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In America, each year hundreds of thousands of students and teachers are victimized by acts of crime and violence on the school grounds. These victimizations vary from thefts, threats, and bullying to physical assaults, shootings, and killings. This book addresses these criminal challenges and identifies research-based solutions. Specifically, it presents exemplary policies, programs, and practices that can be used to develop high-performance schools in high-risk environments. Leadership Against School Violence explores the struggles and achievements of students and educators in middle schools located in high-risk communities. Historically, this educational time period has been found to be the most challenging for educators, and the most threatening for students. During this period, students are particularly vulnerable to the seductions of drugs, gangs and violence, and related school failure. This book examines these challenges and presents research-based findings, which prove that effective school leadership and a safe school climate are essential to improve student achievement. Educators are encouraged to use these findings to help improve needy schools locally and throughout the world. In the universe of higher education, this timely treatise represents a spirit of leadership that honors the work of all educators and law enforcement personnel who have committed their lives to serve, protect, and empower our children.

Book Synopsis Does Leadership Matter? by : Jonathan M. Leff

Download or read book Does Leadership Matter? written by Jonathan M. Leff. This book was released on 2014. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine if there is a relationship between transformational principal leadership style, a safe school climate, and school safety (specifically, the number of reported fights and reported bullying incidents) in Broward County, Florida's middle schools. This study also investigated if a relationship exists between transformational leadership and a safe school climate, transformational leadership, and the number of bullying incidents and student fights, and a safe school climate and the number of bullying incidents and student fights. The study surveyed 12 middle schools located in a large, urban district in south Florida. Principal leadership style was determined from the MLQ-5X, school safety climate was determined from the school district's Annual Customer Survey, and the reported number of fights and bullying incidents recorded in the school districts Discipline Management System were collected via records request for each participating middle school and tallied. Pearson correlations were conducted to examine the bivariate association between the leadership dimensions, a safe school climate, and school violence. Separate multiple linear regression models were used to examine the following relationships: leadership style and the number of reported fights and reported bullying incidents; leadership style and a safe school climate; and a safe school climate and the number of reported fights and reported bullying incidents. The findings suggested that there were no statistically significant correlations between leadership style (transformational, transactional, and laissez-faire), and bullying or fighting, and no statistically significant correlation between principal leadership style and middle school climate. There was a statistically significant correlation found between school climate and the number of student fights. The significance of this finding is important because it illustrates the adverse impact fighting has on student safety, which, in turn, adversely affects the school climate. Therefore, it is up to the school leader to create a climate where everyone feels safe can focus on student achievement.
