Book excerpt: There is currently a proliferation of business-focused leadership development programs in Saudi Arabia. These programs represent a reaction to the shortage of qualified leaders who can drive and sustain both recent and future advances introduced by Saudi Vision 2030, the national transformation program that is introducing social and economic reforms. Importantly, business leadership development has not been studied in this context of contemporary Saudi Arabia. This study examined the state of Saudi leadership development programs by employing an explanatory sequential case study design that focused on a particular leadership development program. Through the use of surveys and participant interviews, results revealed that most participants benefitted from the program and noticed growth in their leadership skills. Results also suggested that participants found small group activities and strategic management to be the most effective program features. Regression analysis results revealed significant positive correlations between participants' growth in their leadership skills and the relevance of program content to their background and work, as well as their engagement in program activities, while a significant negative correlation was found between participants' growth in leadership and their status as a parent. While qualitative interview findings confirmed the first two findings, they contradicted the parental finding, suggesting that more research is needed in this area. Interviews also pointed to some of the most valuable components of the program including the overall quality of training content and delivery, interactivity and practicality of the program, and participants' ability to learn soft skills and change their perspectives. Some areas of improvement were also discovered including enrollment criteria and the quality and comprehensiveness of program material such as readings. The findings and recommendations from this study could benefit various stakeholders. For instance, organizations interested in these programs need to select people who are interested in learning and growing their skills. Organizations also need to consider supplementary initiatives within the workplace to expand leadership development from individual to collective levels. For trainers, practicality and interactivity are key features for successful programs. Finally, many soft skills taught in these programs could be included into school curriculum to ensure future workers are better prepared.

Book excerpt: Leadership in the Middle East has never been as vital as it is in the wake of the global financial crisis and the Arab Spring Ð yet there is a lack of detailed knowledge concerning strategies for developing capacity in leadership, national skills and knowledge management. This volume aims to address this deficit. This book is the first text on the subject of leadership development in the Middle East to be published in English (drawing on both English and Arabic scholarship) and will contribute to the knowledge and understanding of leadership theory and practice in the global economy. The volume provides in-depth analysis of the social, political and economic factors that shape leadership capacity building efforts and shows how leadership behaviours and practices differ from those in the West, reflecting an ethic of care, social responsibility and concern for developing both organization and individual capabilities as well as fostering community improvement and nation-building and advancing social justice and human well-being. The book reveals the complexity of leadership behaviours in the region and contextualizes analyses with broader contemporary debates including migration, governance, climate change and political leadership succession. The book also includes original insights into the role of women in leadership in business, politics and the community. This unique volume will benefit international organizational behaviour/development specialists, international human resource development practitioners and students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. It will be invaluable to development specialists, HR consultants and practitioners on assignment in the Middle East and for policy and capacity development experts in NGOs and international organizations such as the ILO, UN and World Bank.

Book excerpt: Most entrepreneurial businesses fail within the first 5 years of establishment. One of the major causes is the lack of leadership skills by the entrepreneurs. The aim of this quantitative study was to define the leadership skills that were required by entrepreneurs in Saudi Arabia in creating and sustaining entrepreneurial business successfully beyond 5 years and to identify the environmental factors affecting entrepreneurship ecosystem in Saudi Arabia. The population of interest in this study was entrepreneurs from Tasamy in Saudi Arabia. Tasamy is a non-profit organization that focuses on supporting entrepreneurship in Saudi Arabia. To answer the research questions for this study, online surveys were gathered from 125 entrepreneurs, who were 23 years or older, and whose businesses have been in operation for at least 5 years or longer in Saudi Arabia. There were more men in the sample (70.4%) than women (29.6%). Ages of the participants ranged from 23 to 29 years (16.0%) to 50 or above (4.0%) with the median age being 34.5 years. All 125 participants but 6 (4.8%) had at least a bachelor’s degree with 40.8% had earned master’s or doctoral degrees. The top 5 leadership skills, which contributed to their entrepreneurial business success included self-confidence, decision-making ability, determination in setting and achieving goals, effective communication, and adaptability to market circumstances. These helped entrepreneurs in Saudi Arabia to create and sustain business beyond 5 years. Additionally, it was found that the Saudi young generation is a major driving force, there is a need to combat corruption, as well as the need for increased cooperation efforts among government, universities, and private sector to foster entrepreneurial activities in Saudi Arabia. These were the main environmental factors affecting the entrepreneurship environment in Saudi Arabia. Although entrepreneurial success depends on both internal and external factors, entrepreneurs who are planning to start or sustain their businesses may find these findings helpful in their pursuit to create and run successful, new businesses.
