Book Synopsis Ultra-Short Pulsed Laser Engineered Metal-Glass Nanocomposites by : Andrei Stalmashonak

Download or read book Ultra-Short Pulsed Laser Engineered Metal-Glass Nanocomposites written by Andrei Stalmashonak. This book was released on 2013-06-06. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Glasses containing metallic nanoparticles exhibit very promising linear and nonlinear optical properties, mainly due to the surface plasmon resonances (SPRs) of the nanoparticles. The spectral position in the visible and near-infrared range and polarization dependence of the SPR are characteristically determined by the nanoparticles’ shapes. The focus of Ultra-Short Pulsed Laser Engineered Metal-Glass Nanocomposites is the interaction of intense ultra-short laser pulses with glass containing silver nanoparticles embedded in soda-lime glass, and nanostructural modifications in metal-glass nanocomposites induced by such laser pulses. In order to provide a comprehensive physical picture of the processes leading to laser-induced persistent shape transformation of the nanoparticles, series of experimental results investigating the dependences of laser assisted shape modifications of nanoparticles with laser pulse intensity, excitation wavelength, temperature are considered. In addition, the resulting local optical dichroism allows producing very flexibly polarizing optical (sub-) microstructures with well-specified optical properties. The achieved considerable progress towards technological application of this technique, in particular also for long-term optical data storage, is also discussed.

Book Synopsis Progress in Nonlinear Nano-Optics by : Shuji Sakabe

Download or read book Progress in Nonlinear Nano-Optics written by Shuji Sakabe. This book was released on 2014-12-27. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the state of the art in nonlinear nanostructures for ultrafast laser applications. Most recent results in two emerging fields are presented: (i) generation of laser-induced nanostructures in materials like metals, metal oxides and semiconductors, and (ii) ultrafast excitation and energy transfer in nanoscale physical, chemical and hybrid systems. Particular emphasis is laid on the up-to-date controversially discussed mechanisms of sub-wavelength ripple formation including models of self-organized material transport and multiphoton excitation channels, nonlinear optics of plasmonic structures (nanotips, nanowires, 3D-metamaterials), and energy localization and transport on ultrafast time scale and spatial nanoscale. High-resolution spectroscopy, simulation and characterization techniques are reported. New applications of ultrashort-pulsed lasers for materials processing and the use of nanostructured materials for characterizing laser fields and laser-matter-interactions are discussed.

Book Synopsis Laser-induced Shape Transformation of Silver Nanoparticles Embedded in Glass by : Andrei Stalmashonak

Download or read book Laser-induced Shape Transformation of Silver Nanoparticles Embedded in Glass written by Andrei Stalmashonak. This book was released on 2009. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Glasses containing metallic nanoparticles show very promising linear and nonlinear optical properties, mainly due to the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of the nanoparticles. Spectral position (in the visible and near-infrared range) and polarization dependence of the SPR are, besides other parameters, characteristically determined by the nanoparticles' shapes. In this context, laser-based techniques to modify the shape of the metal particles are of great interest since they provide a very powerful and flexible tool to control and optimize the optical properties of these materials. This thesis considers aspects of interactions of intense fs laser pulses with silver nanoparticles incorporated in soda-lime glass; and reveals new information concerning the processes arising by excitation of the silver nanoparticles by the laser pulses and leading to structural alterations. The studies presented in the thesis aim to understand in details the mechanism of NP shape transformation, as well as, to optimize the technique of laser-induced modification of the optical properties of composite materials with metal nanoparticles for production of (sub-) micron structures with high polarization contrast and very broad tunable range of dichroism; that, in turn, will allow this technique to be used for many applications.
