Book Synopsis James in Postcolonial Perspective by : K. Jason Coker

Download or read book James in Postcolonial Perspective written by K. Jason Coker. This book was released on 2015. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James confronts the exploitive wealthy; it also opposes Pauline hybridity. K. Jason Coker argues that postcolonial perspectives allow us to understand how these themes converge in the letter. James opposes the exploitation of the Roman Empire and a peculiar Pauline form of hybridity that compromises with it; refutes Roman cultural practices, such as the patronage system and economic practices, that threaten the identity of the letters recipients; and condemns those who would transgress the boundaries between purity and impurity, God and world.

Book Synopsis Colonialism and Postcolonial Development by : James Mahoney

Download or read book Colonialism and Postcolonial Development written by James Mahoney. This book was released on 2010-02-15. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this comparative-historical analysis of Spanish America, Mahoney offers a new theory of colonialism and postcolonial development. He explores why certain kinds of societies are subject to certain kinds of colonialism and why these forms of colonialism give rise to countries with differing levels of economic prosperity and social well-being. Mahoney contends that differences in the extent of colonialism are best explained by the potentially evolving fit between the institutions of the colonizing nation and those of the colonized society. Moreover, he shows how institutions forged under colonialism bring countries to relative levels of development that may prove remarkably enduring in the postcolonial period. The argument is sure to stir discussion and debate, both among experts on Spanish America who believe that development is not tightly bound by the colonial past, and among scholars of colonialism who suggest that the institutional identity of the colonizing nation is of little consequence.

Book Synopsis Toward a Postcolonial Reading of the Epistle of James by : Ingeborg Mongstad-Kvammen

Download or read book Toward a Postcolonial Reading of the Epistle of James written by Ingeborg Mongstad-Kvammen. This book was released on 2013-06-15. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Toward a Postcolonial Reading of the Epistle of James offers an interpretation of Jas 2:1-13 putting the text in the midst of the Roman imperial system of rank. This study shows that the conflict of the text has more to do with differences of rank than poverty and wealth. The main problem is that the Christian assemblies are acting according to Roman cultural etiquette instead of their Jewish-Christian heritage when a Roman equestrian and a beggar visit the assembly. The members of the assemblies are accused of having become too Roman. From a postcolonial perspective, this is a typical case of hybrid identities. Additional key concepts from postcolonialism, such as diaspora, ‘othering’, naming of oppressors, and binarisms such as coloniser/colonised, centre/margin, honour/shame and power/powerless, are highlighted throughout the study.

Book Synopsis Beyond Postcolonial Theory by : NA NA

Download or read book Beyond Postcolonial Theory written by NA NA. This book was released on 2016-04-30. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Opposing the orthodoxies of establishment postcolonialism, Beyond Postcolonial Theory posits acts of resistance and subversion by people of color as central to the unfolding dialogue with Western hegemony. The testimonies and signifying practices of Rigoberta Menchu, C.L.R. James, various "minority" writers in the United States, and intellectuals from Africa, Latin America, and Asia are counterposed against the dogmas of contingency, borderland nomadism, panethnicity, and the ideology of identity politics and transcultural postmodern pastiche. Reappropriating ideas from Gramsci, Bakhtin, Althusser, Freire, and others in the radical democratic tradition, San Juan deploys them to recover the memory of national liberation struggles (Fanon, Cabral, Che Guevara) on the face of the triumphal march of globalized capitalism.
