Near the center of a representative plot of each treat ment, an area 3 by 5 feet-was selected under conditions of uniform stand and where examination showed the soil to be of uniform type. A' templet-with inside dimensions of 3 by 5 feet was fastened to the ground surface. All plants within this area were trimmed to a stem length of one inch above the crown, the number of plants then counted, and cut off at a point immediately below the crown.
