Using a method of obtaining directional solidification with very steep thermal gradients, solidification was 'unidirectional'; columnar grains extended from the bottom nearly to the top of 9 in. and 15 in. ingots. A variety of different casting were poured and treated in various ways to study the effect of (1) thermal and nucleation variables on grain structure and microporosity, and (2) the effect of grain structure and microporosity on mechanical properties. A special microradiographic technique was developed to measure very small amounts of microporosity. (Author).
