Book Synopsis Specialized Discourse by : Maurizio Gotti

Download or read book Specialized Discourse written by Maurizio Gotti. This book was released on 2003. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the various features of specialized discourse in order to assess its degree of specificity and diversification, as compared to general language. Prior to any analysis of such traits, the notion of specialized discourse and its distinctive properties are clarified, also as compared to other features frequently occurring in specialized texts which cannot be considered distinctive. The presence of such properties are accounted for not only in linguistic but also in pragmatic terms since the approach is interpretative rather tan merely descriptive. The complexity of this discourse calls for a multidimensional analysis, covering both lexis and morpho-syntax as well as textual patterning. Some lexical aspects, morphosyntactic features and textual genres are also examined from a diachronic perspective, thus showing how various conventions concerning specialized discourse have developed over the last few centuries.

Book Synopsis Studies in Specialized Discourse by : John Flowerdew

Download or read book Studies in Specialized Discourse written by John Flowerdew. This book was released on 2006-01-01. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together a selection of papers originally presented at the Language for Specific Purposes Symposium which took place in Bergamo, Italy from 29 August to 2 September, 2005. In selecting from papers on specialized discourse presented at this conference, the editors have tried to create a thematic unity by grouping the papers according to four disciplinary areas: academic and scientific discourse, business discourse, institutional discourse, and legal discourse. Within these fields, a diversity of approaches has been maintained in order to represent the eclectic nature of studies in specialized discourse as they are carried out today. It is no coincidence that the papers fall into these four areas, as these are fields with a very international dimension and hence the use of English, as the increasingly global language, is naturally very important. Indeed, all the papers included in this publication are in English and mainly focus on English. On the other hand, the contributors to this volume come from a range of different countries and mother tongues. This diversity represents the international interest in English as a language of specialized discourse and communication.

Download or read book New Trends in Specialized Discourse Analysis written by Maurizio Gotti. This book was released on 2006. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together a selection of contributions presented at the 15th European Symposium on Languages for Special Purposes, held at the University of Bergamo (Italy) from 29 August to 2 September 2005. The conference title, «New Trends in Specialized Discourse», reflects the emphasis given to recent orientations in research, coming from established as well as new authors in the field. As suggested by the title of this volume, the analysis of specialized discourse calls for a specialized discourse analysis. When applied linguists deal with vocational discourses, they are faced with a double challenge: on the one hand, an understanding of textualisations often alien to the general language; on the other hand, the use of analytical tools designed specifically for their investigation. The studies presented in this volume position themselves somewhere along this continuum, focusing alternatively on converging/diverging features of texts and discourses.

Book Synopsis Features of Naturalness in Conversation by : Martin Warren

Download or read book Features of Naturalness in Conversation written by Martin Warren. This book was released on 2006-01-01. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study describes a detailed and original piece of research work, investigating a very important genre of human communication, and that is conversation. It provides a definition of the genre of conversation by describing nine features of conversation, namely multiple sources, discourse coherence, language as doing, co-operation, unfolding, open-endedness, artifacts, inexplicitness and shared responsibility. These nine features of naturalness in conversation serve to distinguish conversation from specialized discourse types. The study illustrates the nine defining features of conversation with authentic conversational data collected surreptitiously in England. While this study is of native speakers of English, the nine defining features of naturalness of English conversation are applicable to conversations conducted in other languages.
