Book excerpt: Sleep is one of the key underpinnings of human health yet sleep deprivation and impaired sleep are rampant in modern life. Sleep and wake are a true yin yang phenomenon, each affecting the other and together forming a harmonious whole. Healthy sleep is a whole-body process impacted by circadian rhythm, daily activities, and emotional well-being, among others. When properly aligned, these work in concert to produce restorative and refreshing sleep. When not in balance, however, sleep disorders result. Yet too often, the conventional medical approach to treatment of sleep disorders is compartmentalized, failing to recognize all of the complex interactions that are involved. The first book in its field, Integrative Sleep Medicine offers a true comprehensive approach to sleep and sleep disorders by delineating the many factors that interplay into healthy sleep. Health care practitioners can learn how to better manage their patients with sleep disorders by integrating complementary and conventional approaches. Using an evidence-based approach throughout, this book describes the basics of normal sleep, then delves into the foundations of integrative sleep medicine, including the circadian rhythm, mind-body sleep connection, light, dreaming, the gastrointestinal system, and botanicals and supplements. Specific sleep issues and disorders are then addressed from an integrative perspective, including insomnia, obstructive sleep apnea, sleep related movement disorders, and parasomnias.

Download or read book Integrative Men's Health written by MD, MPH Myles D. Spar. This book was released on 2014-02-05. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a field, men's health is far behind women's health in terms of the availability of reliable, scientifically based information that men, their partners, and health care providers can rely on when seeking information and treatment. Moreover, integrative approaches are becoming more popular with men whose healthcare providers understand that most of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in men, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, urologic disease, and sexual dysfunction, can be ameliorated using an integrative approach, with more emphasis on the patient-provider relationship, lifestyle change, and the use of proven complementary modalities. Integrative Men's Health provides an evidence-based perspective on the health problems that affect men and the ways in which such problems may be prevented or treated utilizing a broad armamentarium of approaches - from conventional tools to complementary modalities. All chapters take into consideration of all the factors that influence men's health including body, mind, and spirit in a way that neither rejects alternative approaches nor accepts any of them uncritically.

Book Synopsis Sleep Medicine by : Kathleen Yaremchuk

Download or read book Sleep Medicine written by Kathleen Yaremchuk. This book was released on 2011. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In spite of the fact that over one third of all adults and children with sleep disorders present initially to an otolaryngologist for diagnosis and treatment, there is a paucity of available educational material written from and for the ENT perspective. This new book, featuring chapters from contributing experts in other related fields, provides materials necessary to practice sleep medicine, covering the basics of both adult and pediatric Sleep Medicine as it applies to the clinical practice of Otolaryngology. It is the only book to provide an in depth review of clinical sleep medicine with coverage of sleep testing modalities and to focus on the clinical sleep disorders that an otolaryngologist is likely to see in an office practice. The evaluation, including history, examination and testing, are detailed with clinical examples; Treatment options, including Positive Airway Pressure, Mandibular Advancement Devices and Surgical Treatments are discussed with regards to efficacy, patient selection and appropriate follow up; and an extended section focuses on the evaluation of the sleepy or fatigued patient, a group frequently seen by otolaryngologists with etiologies possibly due to causes other than obstructive sleep apnea. As of 2008, the two authors are among only 49 Otolaryngologists that are Board Certified in Sleep Medicine. Their book is a crucial addition to the literature for clinicians and residents; it is also geared to supporting those wishing to attain the American Board of Medical Specialties' conjoint Board Certification in Sleep Medicine which, on implementation in 2007, allowed Board Certified Pediatricians, Otolaryngologists, Neurologist/Psychiatrists and Pulmonologists to sit for the exam.
