This book was released on 1983. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Large screen cages were used to confine varying populations of bean leaf beetles, Cerotoma trifurcata (Forster), on soybean plants, Glycine max (L.) Merrill, in order to study the effects of larval feeding on nodulation and nitrogen fixation. The study was conducted during the summers of 1978, using 5 treatment levels, and 1979, using 4 treatment levels. Mean season-long populations ranging from 0.38 to 2.62 adults per sweep caused significant (P 0.05) amounts of nodule demage. Nodule quality, as determined by number and total dry mass of nodules per plant, was adversely affected by larval feeding in all infested treatments in 1979, but appeared unaffected in 1978. However, contamination of the control at about the middle of the 1978 growing season somewhatconfounded that year's dat. Nitrogen fixing capacty of plants in infested treatments was significantly reduced (P 0.05) for both years and averaged only ca. 55% of the rate of control plants according to results of acetylene-ethylene reduction assays. Yield was not significantly (P 0.05) influenced by this reduction in nitrog fixing ability.
