Book Synopsis In the Ring of the Rise by : Vincent C. Marinaro

Download or read book In the Ring of the Rise written by Vincent C. Marinaro. This book was released on 2001-10. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than fifty years ago, Vincent Marinaro's Modern Dry-Fly Code (page 121) was hailed as "the best angling work of the last half century" and "the first original American contribution to fly-fishing." Now, for the first time in paperback, The Lyons Press brings Marinaro's intense and remarkable originality to a second book of profound significance. Marinaro's approach is nothing short of revolutionary. His startling high-speed color photographs explore the feeding patterns and behavior of the trout, revealing unsuspected responses that the fisherman can exploit with new tactics and new fly patterns. In addition, he provides a novel and unique way of testing fly patterns, the "game of nods"; a fresh look at rod design; new revelations about the spinner; an expanded treatment of his pathbreaking study of the Caenis; and further explorations with terrestrials. There is also a special discussion of limestone and freestone rivers. Graced by the fine line drawings of Pearce Bates and laced with accounts of the author's exciting adventures with trout, In the Ring of the Rise is must reading for all serious fly-fishermen.

Book Synopsis Selling the Five Rings by : Robert Knight Barney

Download or read book Selling the Five Rings written by Robert Knight Barney. This book was released on 2004. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The only volume available that explores the winter games as a whole, The Winter Olympics is invaluable reading for understanding the movement's roots as well as the contemporary issues surrounding the Games. The 2002 Olympic Winter Games were an extravaganza of global proportions, yet the winter games have not always enjoyed such favor or prominence. Dating retroactively to 1924 but not officially part of the Olympic program until 1928, the winter games have had an uneasy history. For the first fifty years controversies raged continually over whether the commercialism and professionalism in skiing, ice skating, and hockey were compatible with the Olympic ideal of amateurism and even whether winter sports should continue to be part of the Olympic program of international sport. Avery Brundage, president of the IOC from 1952 to 1972, was an outspoken critic of what he called the "Frostbite Follies." Opposition to the Winter Olympics was so great that the IOC Executive Board in 1964 considered eliminating the Games but eventually voted to continue them only through 1972.

Book Synopsis The Rise by : Sarah Lewis

Download or read book The Rise written by Sarah Lewis. This book was released on 2014-03-04. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From celebrated art historian, curator, and teacher Sarah Lewis, a fascinating examination of how our most iconic creative endeavors—from innovation to the arts—are not achievements but conversions, corrections after failed attempts. The gift of failure is a riddle: it will always be both the void and the start of infinite possibility. The Rise—part investigation into a psychological mystery, part an argument about creativity and art, and part a soulful celebration of the determination and courage of the human spirit—makes the case that many of the world’s greatest achievements have come from understanding the central importance of failure. Written over the course of four years, this exquisite biography of an idea is about the improbable foundations of a creative human endeavor. Each chapter focuses on the inestimable value of often ignored ideas—the power of surrender, how play is essential for innovation, the “near win” can help propel you on the road to mastery, the importance of grit and creative practice. The Rise shares narratives about figures past and present that range from choreographers, writers, painters, inventors, and entrepreneurs; Frederick Douglass, Samuel F.B. Morse, Diane Arbus, and J.K. Rowling, for example, feature alongside choreographer Paul Taylor, Nobel Prize–winning physicists Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov, and Arctic explorer Ben Saunders. With valuable lessons for pedagogy and parenting, for innovation and discovery, and for self-direction and creativity, The Rise prompts deep reflection and sparks inspiration.

From #1 Bestselling author Morgan Rice comes a sweeping new epic fantasy series: RISE OF THE DRAGONS (KINGS AND SORCERERS—Book 1). Kyra, 15, dreams of becoming a famed warrior, like her father, even though she is the only girl in a fort of boys. As she struggles to understand her special skills, her mysterious inner power, she realizes she is different than the others. But a secret is being kept from her about her birth and the prophecy surrounding her, leaving her to wonder who she really is. Just as Kyra is coming of age, the local lord comes to take her away. Her father wants to wed her off to save her. Kyra, though, refuses, and she quests on her own, into a dangerous wood, where she encounters a wounded dragon—and ignites a series of events that will change the kingdom forever. 15 year old Alec, meanwhile, sacrifices for his brother, taking his place in the draft, and is carted off to The Flames, a wall of flames a hundred feet high that wards off the army of Trolls to the east. On the far side of the kingdom, Merk, a mercenary striving to leave behind his dark past, quests through the wood to become a Watcher of the Towers and help guard the Sword of Fire, the paranormal source of the kingdom’s power. But the Trolls want the Sword, too—and they prepare for a massive invasion that could destroy the kingdoms forever. With its strong atmosphere and complex characters, RISE OF THE DRAGONS is a sweeping, romantic saga of knights and warriors, of kings and lords, of honor and valor, of magic, action, adventure, destiny, sorcery, monsters and dragons.
