Book excerpt: The poems of In the Months of My Son’s Recovery inhabit the voice and point of view of the mother of a heroin addict who enters recovery. With clear perception and precise emotional tones, Kate Daniels explores recovery experiences from multiple, evolving vantage points, including active addiction, 12-step treatment, co-occurring mental illness and addiction (known as dual diagnosis), and relapse. These intimately voiced, harrowing poems reveal the collateral damage that addiction inflicts on friends and families, in addition to the primary damage sustained by addicts themselves. Offering bold descriptions of medical processes, maternal love, and the potential for hope as an antidote to despair, this timely collection offers a firsthand account of the many crises at the heart of the opioid epidemic.

Book Synopsis Under Our Roof by : Madeleine Dean

Download or read book Under Our Roof written by Madeleine Dean. This book was released on 2021-02-16. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A congresswoman and her son reveal how he survived a ten-year battle with opioid abuse—and what their family’s journey to recovery can teach us about finding hope amid the unspeakable. “Beautiful and inspiring.”—Maria Shriver’s Sunday Paper (Book of the Week) When Madeleine Dean discovered that her son Harry was stealing from the family to feed a painkiller addiction, she was days away from taking the biggest risk of her life: running for statewide office in Pennsylvania. For years, she had sensed something was wrong. Harry was losing weight and losing friends. He had lost the brightness in his eyes and voice, changing from a young boy with boundless enthusiasm to a shadow of himself, chasing something she could not see. Now her worst fears had come to light. Under Our Roof is the story of a national crisis suffered in the intimacy of so many homes, told with incredible candor through the dual perspectives of a mother rising in politics and a son living a double life, afraid of what might happen if his secret is exposed. In this honest, bracing, yet ultimately uplifting memoir, they discuss the patterns of a family dealing with an unspoken disease, the fear that keeps addicts hiding in shame, and the moments of honesty, faith, and personal insight that led to Harry’s recovery. In a country searching for answers to the devastating effects of opioids and drug abuse, Under Our Roof is a ray of hope in the darkness. It is not only a love story between mother and son but also an honest account of a pressing national crisis by a family poised to make a difference.

Download or read book The Joey Song written by Sandra Swenson. This book was released on 2014-08-25. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sometimes addicts don't recovery, but with love and faith their families can. By the age of twenty, Joey had OD'd, attempted suicide, dropped out of college, survived a near-fatal car accident, done time behind bars, and been kicked out of rehab. Now manipulative and hateful, the once sweet and charming Joey is long gone. This is the poignant story of a defiant addict and the mother who won't give up on him. She finally realizes that it hurts more to hand on than to let go, and that letting go is not the same as giving up. Sandra Swenson beautifully orchestrates a mother's lessons of love and loss, while surviving her son's addiction. Despairing parents of addicts will find comfort in this stark, yet hopeful tale.

Download or read book Recovering Our Children written by John C. Cates. This book was released on 2003-01-21. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Art Greer-Assistant to the General Presbyter, The Presbytery of New Covenant Presbyterian Church (U.S. A.) When parents came to me, having discovered their child was involved in drugs, and asked, "What in the word do I do now?", my answer was simple: "See John Cates!" It still is. Barring that, this book, Recovering Our Children, is the next best thing! Phil Lineberger-Pastor of William Trace Baptist Church of Houston, Texas and Past President of the Baptist General Convention of Texas Recovering Our Children is a winner. John Cates and Jennifer Cummings draw upon their education and experience to help parents recognize the evidence of a young person's abuse of chemicals, to help the parents and young person reach out to those who can help, and to help the parents and young person reclaim control of their own lives. This book will serve as a valuable and encouraging tool for those who have reached the end of their rope. I highly recommend Recovering Our Children Patricia Creer-Past President of the Texas Association of Addiction Professionals Recovering Our Children, derived from experience with thousands of children and their families is reflective of the hard earned lessons of professionals who have intervened in a personal way for a number of years. I hope that this book will reach many in need, for it will help them. But I also hope that those who compose the community that will nurture Alternative Peer Groups will read it and pay attention.

Book Synopsis We Got This by : Jane B.

Download or read book We Got This written by Jane B.. This book was released on 2018-12-31. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When we discovered our teenage son had endured a shocking childhood trauma, he had already turned to drugs and alcohol to deal with the resulting severe PTSD. Attempts to intervene at home were largely unsuccessful. Over a tortured weekend, we decided to enroll him in a program that would ultimately be his salvation, but it meant that he would be living very far away. The best way to reach him for the ensuing year and a half was through letters. From one addict in recovery to another, my experience, strength and hope was all I had to offer my son. Those letters were really all we had to build on, to lead us back to a place of healing and mutual compassion. They detail the struggles we faced together throughout his (ongoing) recovery, and reveal the truths I have cherished in my own journey of recovery. May they inspire you to share your own truths with your recovering loved one. The less that remains unsaid, the better the chance of a rebirth. Today, our son is 24 months' sober, a college freshman with big plans and a man of deep integrity, thoughtfulness and self-confidence. The truth really can set us free.
