Book excerpt: In Search of Admiration and Respect examines the institutionalization of Chinese cultural diplomacy in the period between high imperialism and the international ascendance of the People's Republic of China. During these years, Chinese intellectuals and officials tried to promote the idea of China's cultural refinement in an effort to combat negative perceptions of the nation. Yanqiu Zheng argues that, unlike similar projects by more established powers, Chinese cultural diplomacy in this era was not carried out solely by a functional government agency; rather, limited resources forced an uneasy collaboration between the New York-based China Institute and the Chinese Nationalist government. In Search of Admiration and Respect uses the Chinese case to underscore what Zheng calls "infrastructure of persuasion," in which American philanthropy, museums, exhibitions, and show business had disproportionate power in setting the agenda of unequal intercultural encounters. This volume also provides historical insights into China's ongoing quest for international recognition. Drawing upon diverse archival sources, Zheng expands the contours of cultural diplomacy beyond established powers and sheds light on the limited agency of peripheral nations in their self-representation.

Book excerpt: In Search of Safety takes a close look at the sources of gendered violence and conflict in women’s prisons. The authors examine how intersectional inequalities and cumulative disadvantages are at the root of prison conflict and violence and mirror the women’s pathways to prison. Women must negotiate these inequities by developing forms of prison capital—social, human, cultural, emotional, and economic—to ensure their safety while inside. The authors also analyze how conflict and subsequent violence result from human-rights violations inside the prison that occur within the gendered context of substandard prison conditions, inequalities of capital among those imprisoned, and relationships with correctional staff. In Search of Safety proposes a way forward—the implementation of international human-rights standards for U.S. prisons.

Book Synopsis In Search of Our Humanity by : Valerii Aleksandrovich Kuvakin

Download or read book In Search of Our Humanity written by Valerii Aleksandrovich Kuvakin. This book was released on 2003-04. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Russian philosopher Valery A. Kuvakin reviews the major principles of humanism as the starting point for an overall definition of humanity. Humanism, as definied by Kuvakin, is based on the scientific method, seeks objective knowledge, is anthropocentric, uses reason as its guiding principle, and extolls common sense based on scientifically verifiable knowledge without any restriction from tradition, customs, political systems, or religion. Arrayed against these humanist values are the "pseudovalues" of the paranormal and irrational faith, and the "antivalues" of greed, corruption, addiction, violence, and environmental destruction. Avoiding both the heaven of our fantasies and the hell of our own making, humanism offers the 21st century the basis for establishing a just, free, and sane society.
