Book Synopsis Improving Soil Fertility Recommendations in Africa using the Decision Support System for Agrotechnology Transfer (DSSAT) by : Job Kihara

Download or read book Improving Soil Fertility Recommendations in Africa using the Decision Support System for Agrotechnology Transfer (DSSAT) written by Job Kihara. This book was released on 2012-03-12. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book gives a detailed description of the application of DSSAT in simulating crop and soil processes within various Agro-ecological zones in Africa. The book, an output of a series of 3 workshops, provides examples of the application of DSSAT models to simulate nitrogen applications, soil and water conservation practices including effects of zai technology, phosphorus and maize productivity, generation of genetic coefficients, long-term soil fertility management technologies in the drylands, microdosing, optimization of nitrogen x germplasms x water, spatial analysis of water and nutrient use efficiencies and, tradeoff analysis. The minimum dataset requirements for DSSAT is discussed. This book arises from attempts to address the limited use of models in decision support by African agricultural (both soil scientist and agronomists) scientists.

Book Synopsis Recarbonizing global soils – A technical manual of recommended sustainable soil management by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations

Download or read book Recarbonizing global soils – A technical manual of recommended sustainable soil management written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. This book was released on 2021-09-08. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last decades, soil organic carbon (SOC) attracted the attention of a much wider array of specialists beyond agriculture and soil science, as it was proven to be one of the most crucial components of the earth’s climate system, which has a great potential to be managed by humans. Soils as a carbon pool are one of the key factors in several Sustainable Development Goals, in particular Goal 15, “Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss” with the SOC stock being explicitly cited in Indicator 15.3.1. This technical manual is the first attempt to gather, in a standardized format, the existing data on the impacts of the main soil management practices on SOC content in a wide array of environments, including the advantages, drawbacks and constraints. This manual presents different sustainable soil management (SSM) practices at different scales and in different contexts, supported by case studies that have been shown with quantitative data to have a positive effect on SOC stocks and successful experiences of SOC sequestration in practical field applications. Volume 3 includes a total of 49 practices that have a direct impact on SOC sequestration and maintenance in cropland, grassland, integrated systems and farming approaches.

Book Synopsis Improving Modeling Tools to Assess Climate Change Effects on Crop Response by : Jerry L. Hatfield

Download or read book Improving Modeling Tools to Assess Climate Change Effects on Crop Response written by Jerry L. Hatfield. This book was released on 2020-01-22. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crop model intercomparison and improvement are required to advance understanding of the impact of future climate change on crop growth and yield. The initial efforts undertaken in the Agriculture Model Intercomparison and Improvement Project (AgMIP) led to several observations where crop models were not adequately simulating growth and development. These studies revealed where enhanced efforts should be undertaken in experimental data to quantify the carbon dioxide × temperature × water interactions in plant growth and yield. International leaders in this area held a symposium at the 2013 ASA, CSSA, and SSSA Annual Meeting to discuss this topic. This volume in the Advances in Agricultural Systems Modeling series presents experimental observations across crops and simulation modeling outcomes and addresses future challenges in improving crop simulation models. IN PRESS! This book is being published according to the “Just Published” model, with more chapters to be published online as they are completed.
