An amateur, who prosecuted his studies with the constant aim of acquiring connoisseurship in the old masters, he did not call himself an expert although he has been called and considered such by those who were themselves authorities. Certain it is that his judgment has been repeatedly confirmed by the German experts who have stamped their personalities on the world of art and whose opinions are accepted in the courts of the highest and last resort.
