Download or read book Identity, Conflict and Cooperation in International River Systems written by Jack Kalpakian. This book was released on 2017-11-30. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kalpakian tests the dominant assumption that water disputes cause violent conflict between states and other actors in world politics. Using case studies from arid regions to bias the effort towards this assumption, he finds that issues related to identity have been the real source of conflict in the river basins studied. This essential volume: - challenges conventional assumptions about water and conflict - displaces the state as the sole actor in violent conflict - reveals the link between conflict and identity This book invites the reader to address the complexity in the relationships binding peoples and states in an international river basin.

Book Synopsis The Politics of Water in Africa by : Inga M. Jacobs

Download or read book The Politics of Water in Africa written by Inga M. Jacobs. This book was released on 2012-11-02. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water resources and related issues are of great significance in 21st century politics. In Africa, for example, hydropolitics affect politics and policymaking at the local, national, and international levels. To investigate water politics, this unique work focuses on the issue transboundary water governance in Southern and Eastern Africa. Based on extensive field research, it offers a comparative study of the Orange Senqu and Nile basins in Africa, arguing that both causal and behavioral factors (such as localization and trust building) drive the multi-leveled development of cooperative management norms and foster the creation of regional communities of interest. The book combines theory, analysis, and fieldwork within the framework of Constructivism as well as a wide range of examples to identify and analyze the nature of norms in hydropolitics. By doing so, it will help shape the debate on how water conflict and cooperative governance should evolve and will interest anyone studying African politics, hydropolitics, and issues of development.

Book Synopsis Beyond the success in transboundary water management by : Abdurasul Kayumov

Download or read book Beyond the success in transboundary water management written by Abdurasul Kayumov. This book was released on 2016-02-29. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, when so many countries share the same transboundary river basins, unilateral water management becomes extremely critical. Joint water management, on the other hand, faces many obstacles, because of states' interests in particular function of the water. Water is needed for drinking, household, irrigation, hydro-energy, fishing, navigation, tourism as well as many other purposes, and unfortunately, it cannot meet all needs simultaneously. The satisfaction of one need often impedes the others. In this regard, transboundary river basins often create challenges among states by leading them to negotiate in asymmetric relations. This book is an attempt to address the effectiveness of transboundary water management from a social and political perspective by offering new theoretical underpinnings to understand the success conditions in sharing transboundary water resources. The author focused in the work on three conditions, i.e. institutional conditions and country specific conditions, as well as conditions of regional integrity level and role of external actors. The proposed conditions were tested on two river basins i.e. the successful one in the example of Orange/Senqu river basin and unsuccessful one in the case of Naryn/Syrdarya river basin.
