Book Synopsis The Spirit of Holiness by : Terry Delaney

Download or read book The Spirit of Holiness written by Terry Delaney. This book was released on 2020-09-23. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does Biblical spirituality look like? What does it mean to be "spiritual"? What priorities and practices inspire one to live the Christian life well? While there are a multitude of answers to these questions, very rarely are they both clear and profound. As a result, Christians can be left feeling lost and confused. In The Spirit of Holiness, Terry Delaney and Roger Duke have collected a variety of reflections on spirituality that are shaped by the Bible, theology, and the voices and examples of those who have come before us. With authors like Al Mohler, Michael Haykin, and Steve Lawson covering topics such as perseverance, depression, friendship, choice, and faith, The Spirit of Holiness encourages and directs Christians to a healthy biblical spirituality informed by their forebears of the faith.

Book Synopsis The Context of Holiness: Psychological and Spiritual Reflections on the Life of St. Thérèse of Lisieux by : Marc Foley

Download or read book The Context of Holiness: Psychological and Spiritual Reflections on the Life of St. Thérèse of Lisieux written by Marc Foley. This book was released on 2020-03-27. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores both the psychological and spiritual dimensions of the life of St. Thérèse of Lisieux. The basic premise of this book is that the spiritual life is not an encapsulated sphere, cloistered from the realities of our human existence. Rather it is our response to God within the physical, psychological, social and emotional dimensions of life. St. Thérèse did not grow in holiness apart from the human condition. Like all of us, she was emotionally scarred by the fragileness of life. She was deeply wounded by the death of her mother at the age of four, bedridden as the result of a neurotic episode when she was ten, struggled with debilitating scruples most of her life, and suffered an agonizing dark night of faith. St. Thérèse was no plaster statue saint. Her life was a real life. As it unfolds before us on the pages of Story of a Soul, we see a pilgrim soul who made her way home to God through many raging storms and dark nights. The specific nature of Thérèse's trials may differ from our own, but psychological and emotional suffering are our common lot. For example, we may not have know the pain of our mother dying when we were four, but most of us have know the pain of the loss of a loved one. The sufferings that we share with Thérèse are universal - physical pain, anxiety, anger, sadness, depression, loneliness, doubts of faith, to name a few. These sufferings make doing the will of God difficult, but they are the context of our choices. They are the context of holiness.

Book Synopsis Historical Dictionary of the Holiness Movement by : William Kostlevy

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of the Holiness Movement written by William Kostlevy. This book was released on 2009-08-03. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is much harder to define a religious movement than it is to define a religion or denomination. That applies especially when that movement almost defies definition as the Holiness Movement does. The Holiness Movement is a Methodist religious renewal movement that has over 12 million adherents worldwide. Perhaps the most familiar public manifestation of the holiness movement has been its urban holiness missions, and the Salvation Army_noted for its service ministries among poor and people suffering the dislocations that accompany war and disaster_is the most notable example. In the second edition of the Historical Dictionary of the Holiness Movement, important new developments in the Holiness Movement_such as the widely discussed 'Holiness Manifesto'_are thoroughly discussed, and the content has also been expanded to include information on figures from Asia and Africa to reflect the continued growth of the Holiness Movement. With a chronology, an introductory essay, a bibliography, and over 400 cross-referenced dictionary entries, this reference has information that cannot be found elsewhere.
