Book excerpt: The Louisiana 4th Infantry Regiment, organized at New Orleans, Louisiana in April, 1861, contained men from New Orleans and the parishes of St. Helena, Lafourche, West Feliciana, Plaquemines, West Baton Rouge, and East Carroll. The unit served on the gulf coast of Louisiana and Mississippi, then moved to Tennessee where it was engaged in the fight at Shiloh. Later it was assigned to Maxey's Brigade, Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana. It saw action at Vicksburg and Baton Rouge, and was on duty at Port Hudson. until March, 1863. Sent to Jackson and later Mobile, it then was assigned to Quarles' and Gibbon's Brigade. The regiment participated in the Atlanta and Hood's Tennessee campaigns, and in 1865 returned to Mobile. It sustained 209 casualties at Shiloh, had 403 present for duty in July, 1862, totalled 374 men and 391 arms in December, 1863, and had 161 fit for duty in November, 1864. The 4th was included in the surrender on May 4, 1865. Company A - National Guards - East Baton Rouge Parish Company B - Lake Providence Cadets - Carroll Parish Company C - Delta Rifles - West Baton Rouge Parish Company D - West Baton Rouge Tirailleurs - West Baton Rouge Parish Company E - West Feliciana Rifles - West Feliciana Parish Company F - St. Helena Rifles - St. Helena Parish Company G - Wingfield Rifles - St. Helena Parish Company H - Lafourche Guards - Lafourche Parish Company I - Hunter Rifles "B"- East Feliciana Parish Company K - Hunter Rifles "A" - East Feliciana Parish Note that the information reflected on this roster is of recruitment in 1861. This regiment saw changes in which Co. G left to join the 9th Battalion, Louisiana Partisan Rangers and all other companies were relettered. Also, an additional company, The Packwood Guards (Co. K) was added in May 1862

Book excerpt: The Louisiana 12th Infantry Regiment completed its organization at Camp Moore, Louisiana, in August, 1861. Its companies were from the parishes of Caldwell, Claiborne, Vermilion, Cameron, Calcasieu, Jackson, Ouachita, Bossier, and Iberia. Sent to Missouri, the unit was captured at Island No. 10 in April, 1862. After being exchanged, it was assigned to Rust's, Buford's, T.M. Scott's, and Lowry's Brigade. It fought at Champion's Hill and Jackson before participating in the campaigns of the Army of Tennessee from Resaca to Bentonville. In July, 1862, the unit contained 41 officers and 546 men, reported 11 killed, 57 wounded, and 5 missing out of the 318 engaged at Peach Tree Creek, lost many during Hood's Tennessee Campaign, and surrendered with only a remnant on April 26, 1865. Its commanders were Colonel Thomas M. Scott; Lieutenant Colonels James A. Boyd, Wade H. Hough, Noel L. Nelson, and Thomas C. Standifer; and Majors John C. Knott and Henry V. McCain.

Book excerpt: The Louisiana 21st Infantry Regiment was formed in January, 1862, and mustered into Confederate service in February. Some of the men were recruited in Assumption and St. Helena parishes. The unit was stationed at New Orleans and captured when that city fell in April. After being exchanged, it served in L. Hebert's Brigade, Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana, and was captured again at Vicksburg. During the Vicksburg siege, the regiment lost 16 killed, 50 wounded, and 1 missing, and after the exchange in December, 1863, only 69 men were present. It was not reorganized. Some of the men served later in the Lousiana 22nd Infantry Regiment Consolidated.

Its companies were recruited in the following parishes: Rapides, Bossier, Bienville, De Soto, Livingston, Jackson, Washington, Claiborne, East Carroll, and Madison. The unit served in General R. Taylor's Brigade during Jackson's Valley Campaign and the Seven Days' Battles, then was assigned to Starke's, Hays', and York's command. It fought in many conflicts from Cedar Mountain to Cold Harbor, was involved in Early's operations in the Shenandoah Valley, and later shared in the Appomattox Campaign. This regiment lost 4 killed and 36 wounded at Cross Keys and Port Republic, had 21 killed and 55 wounded at Sharpsburg and 25 killed and 57 wounded at Chancellorsville. It reported 14 casualties at Second Winchester, lost twenty-one percent of the 347 engaged at Gettysburg, and had 130 captured at Rappahannock Station. Only 4 officers and 64 men surrendered with the Army of Northern Virginia.
