Book excerpt: How prepared are you to build fast and efficient web applications? This eloquent book provides what every web developer should know about the network, from fundamental limitations that affect performance to major innovations for building even more powerful browser applications—including HTTP 2.0 and XHR improvements, Server-Sent Events (SSE), WebSocket, and WebRTC. Author Ilya Grigorik, a web performance engineer at Google, demonstrates performance optimization best practices for TCP, UDP, and TLS protocols, and explains unique wireless and mobile network optimization requirements. You’ll then dive into performance characteristics of technologies such as HTTP 2.0, client-side network scripting with XHR, real-time streaming with SSE and WebSocket, and P2P communication with WebRTC. Deliver superlative TCP, UDP, and TLS performance Speed up network performance over 3G/4G mobile networks Develop fast and energy-efficient mobile applications Address bottlenecks in HTTP 1.x and other browser protocols Plan for and deliver the best HTTP 2.0 performance Enable efficient real-time streaming in the browser Create efficient peer-to-peer videoconferencing and low-latency applications with real-time WebRTC transports

Book Synopsis High Performance Datacenter Networks by : Dennis Abts

Download or read book High Performance Datacenter Networks written by Dennis Abts. This book was released on 2011-02-02. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Datacenter networks provide the communication substrate for large parallel computer systems that form the ecosystem for high performance computing (HPC) systems and modern Internet applications. The design of new datacenter networks is motivated by an array of applications ranging from communication intensive climatology, complex material simulations and molecular dynamics to such Internet applications as Web search, language translation, collaborative Internet applications, streaming video and voice-over-IP. For both Supercomputing and Cloud Computing the network enables distributed applications to communicate and interoperate in an orchestrated and efficient way. This book describes the design and engineering tradeoffs of datacenter networks. It describes interconnection networks from topology and network architecture to routing algorithms, and presents opportunities for taking advantage of the emerging technology trends that are influencing router microarchitecture. With the emergence of "many-core" processor chips, it is evident that we will also need "many-port" routing chips to provide a bandwidth-rich network to avoid the performance limiting effects of Amdahl's Law. We provide an overview of conventional topologies and their routing algorithms and show how technology, signaling rates and cost-effective optics are motivating new network topologies that scale up to millions of hosts. The book also provides detailed case studies of two high performance parallel computer systems and their networks. Table of Contents: Introduction / Background / Topology Basics / High-Radix Topologies / Routing / Scalable Switch Microarchitecture / System Packaging / Case Studies / Closing Remarks

Book Synopsis High Performance Networks by : Ahmed N. Tantawy

Download or read book High Performance Networks written by Ahmed N. Tantawy. This book was released on 2012-12-06. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last few years, the world of information networks has undergone significant changes that will revolutionize the future of communications. Data rates have reached the gigabit per second range. Optical fibers have become the transmission medium of choice. Standardization activities have very aggressively produced a set of well established standard for future LANs, MANs and WANs. It has become very difficult for computer and communications professionals to follow these rapidly evolving technologies and standards. High Performance Networks: Technology and Protocols provides a timely technical overview of the start-of-the-art in high performance networking. Chapters cover lightweight protocols, high performance protocol implementation techniques, high speed MAC protocols, optical networks, as well as emerging standards, including ATM, SMDS, B-ISDN, SONET, FCS and HIPPI. Professionals, engineers, and researchers in communications and computers, who need to understand the underlying technologies of high performance (gigabit) networks, will find this volume to be an invaluable reference. The book is also suitable for use as a text for advanced courses on the subject.
