Book excerpt: Presents a detailed treatment manual for conducting problem-solving therapy (PST) for adult cancer patients. The authors describe the profound and extensive psychosocial difficulties that cancer patients often experience. They present the theory underlying this particular form of psychosocial treatment, the research base supporting its general efficacy, and the rationale for its particular applicability for the experience of cancer patients. An overview of PST for cancer patients is provided, including the process of the therapy; the related clinical issues; and the goals of the first, introductory session. A detailed treatment guide to conduct PST for cancer patients is given, including a series of patient handouts, "homework assignments," and sample exercises. To illustrate various therapeutic strategies and training modules, the authors describe two cases that are followed throughout the training. Problem-solving principles that have been adapted to caregiver education are provided.

Book Synopsis Cancer Care for the Whole Patient by : Institute of Medicine

Download or read book Cancer Care for the Whole Patient written by Institute of Medicine. This book was released on 2008-03-19. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancer care today often provides state-of-the-science biomedical treatment, but fails to address the psychological and social (psychosocial) problems associated with the illness. This failure can compromise the effectiveness of health care and thereby adversely affect the health of cancer patients. Psychological and social problems created or exacerbated by cancer-including depression and other emotional problems; lack of information or skills needed to manage the illness; lack of transportation or other resources; and disruptions in work, school, and family life-cause additional suffering, weaken adherence to prescribed treatments, and threaten patients' return to health. Today, it is not possible to deliver high-quality cancer care without using existing approaches, tools, and resources to address patients' psychosocial health needs. All patients with cancer and their families should expect and receive cancer care that ensures the provision of appropriate psychosocial health services. Cancer Care for the Whole Patient recommends actions that oncology providers, health policy makers, educators, health insurers, health planners, researchers and research sponsors, and consumer advocates should undertake to ensure that this standard is met.

Book Synopsis Helping Couples Cope with Women's Cancers by : Karen Kayser

Download or read book Helping Couples Cope with Women's Cancers written by Karen Kayser. This book was released on 2008-03-16. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At last, here is a comprehensive guide for practitioners who work with breast cancer patients and their families. It includes a series of psychosocial interventions to be used with couples during early stage breast cancer. There is extensive evidence that emotional and social support positively influences women’s abilities to cope to breast cancer. The first person that a woman with breast cancer turns to for support is her husband or intimate partner. However, as partners of breast cancer patients are struggling with their emotional distress, they often feel inadequate about their ability to help their wives and partners cope. It is important for practitioners to understand this concept of twofold stress.
