Book excerpt: "The chapters are organized well, and the preface explains how the concept of food is changing over time and how marine organisms are considered as healthy food." —P.N. Sudha, DKM College for Women, Tamil Nadu, India The relationship between food and health has been a growing concern in modern society, and the importance of information on their connection has elevated accordingly. People are becoming prone to diseases due to the deterioration of the environment. Despite a growing interest in preventative medicine in the healthcare sector, few medications can be called preventative drugs. Foods may exhibit completely different functions in a living body, depending on whether their components are simple substances providing energy and nutrition, or valid "functional entities." This book covers all aspects of healthcare solutions through marine-derived materials, with twenty-six chapters exploring an array of topics pertaining to human health in everyday life. Beginning with an introduction to food functionality and disease presentation, Chapters Two to Nine discuss chitin, chitosan, and the production and application of chitosan oligosaccharides regarding anti-cancer, anti-aging, and antioxidant activity. Furthermore, utilization of these cationic polysaccharides in artificial skin development, the prevention of alcohol consumption, dentistry, systemic diseases prevention and Alzheimer dementia are discussed in subsequent chapters. In Chapters Ten and Thirteen, I discuss obesity, osteoporosis, sexual dysfunction and sleep disorders using fisheries products. Additionally, Chapters Fourteen to Eighteen detail the use of marine algae to treat diabetics, allergy, asthma, AIDS and hair loss, as well as the use of fisheries products for hypertension and athlete’s foot. Chapters Twenty-Two through Twenty-Six then shed light on the anti-aging effects of fish, the abundance of taurine in shellfish, antifreeze protein, food shortages through fish breeding, and cosmeceutical product development using marine organisms.

Book Synopsis Marine Organisms as Model Systems in Biology and Medicine by : Malgorzata Kloc

Download or read book Marine Organisms as Model Systems in Biology and Medicine written by Malgorzata Kloc. This book was released on 2018-08-06. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights the potential advantages of using marine invertebrates like tunicates, echinoderms, sponges and cephalopods as models in both biological and medical research. Bioactive compounds found in marine organisms possess antibacterial, antifungal, anti-diabetic and anti-inflammatory properties, and can affect the immune and nervous systems. Despite substantial research on the medicinal attributes of various marine invertebrates, they are still very much underrepresented in scientific literature: the majority of cell, developmental and evolutionary scientific journals only publish research conducted on a few well-known model systems like Drosophila melanogaster or Xenopus laevis. Addressing that gap, this book introduces readers to new model organisms like starfish or nemertera. By showing their benefits with regard to regeneration, stem cell research and Evo-Devo, the authors provide a cross-sectional view encompassing various disciplines of biological research. As such, this book will not only appeal to scientists currently working on marine organisms, but will also inspire future generations to pursue research of their own.

Book Synopsis From Monsoons to Microbes by : National Research Council

Download or read book From Monsoons to Microbes written by National Research Council. This book was released on 1999-05-05. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What can sharks teach us about our immune system? What can horseshoe crabs show us about eyesight? The more we learn about the ocean, the more we realize how critical these vast bodies of water are to our health and well-being. Sometimes the ocean helps us, as when a marine organism yields a new medical treatment. At other times, the ocean poses the threat of coastal storm surges or toxic algal blooms. From Monsoons to Microbes offers a deeper look into the oceans that surround us, often nurturing yet sometimes harming humankind. This book explores the links among physical oceanography, public health, epidemiology, marine biology, and medicine in understanding what the ocean has to offer. It will help readers grasp such important points as: How the ocean's sweeping physical processes create long-term phenomena such as El Nino and short-term disastrous events such as tsunamisâ€"including what communities can do to prepare. What medicines and nutritional products have come from the ocean and what the prospects are for more such discoveries. How estuaries workâ€"where salt and fresh water meetâ€"and what can go wrong, as in the 7,000 square mile "dead zone" at the out-flow of the Mississippi River. How the growing demand for seafood and the expansion of ocean-going transport has increased our exposure to infectious agentsâ€"and how these agents can be tracked down and fought. Why "red tides" of toxic algae suddenly appear in previously unaffected coastal areas, and what happens when algal toxins find their way into our food supply or the air we breathe. The book recommends ways we can implement exciting new technologies to monitor the physics, chemistry, and biology of the ocean to recognize change as it happens. From the impact of worldwide atmospheric warming to the significance of exotic bacteria from submarine hydrothermal vents, the ocean has many depths left to explore.
