Book Synopsis Haptic Human-Computer Interaction by : Stephen Brewster

Download or read book Haptic Human-Computer Interaction written by Stephen Brewster. This book was released on 2003-05-15. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Haptic human-computer interaction is interaction between a human computer user and the computer user interface based on the powerful human sense of touch. Haptic hardware has been discussed and exploited for some time, particularly in the context of computer games. However, so far, little attention has been paid to the general principles of haptic HCI and the systematic use of haptic devices for improving efficiency, effectiveness, and satisfaction in HCI. This book is the first one to focus on haptic human-computer interaction. It is based on a workshop held in Glasgow, UK, in August / September 2000. The 22 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 35 submissions. Besides a brief historic survey, the book offers topical sections on haptic interfaces for blind people, collaborative haptics, psychological issues and measurement, and applications of haptics.

Book Synopsis Haptics for Human-Computer Interaction by : Mounia Ziat

Download or read book Haptics for Human-Computer Interaction written by Mounia Ziat. This book was released on 2023-03. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years haptics has received considerable attention from the field of Human-Computer Interactions (HCI) for its potential to provide more tangible and immersive interfaces. So much of what we call experience relies on our sense of touch and our sense of where our bodies are in the environment. So much so that we long for a technology that could help us share those feelings. Haptic interfaces are the devices that communicate with our sense of touch and proprioception. From the mild resistance built in to the volume knob on your car stereo that allows you to know how many degrees you are turning it without looking at it, to the full body suit that may soon come to your home gaming system, haptics is a vital and growing part of the world around us and has the potential to augment many aspects of our lives. In this monograph, the author presents a selected review of research in haptics to provide HCI and other fields a framework for understanding haptics that will help design better interfaces and, ultimately, new and better experiences for those who interact with technology every day. This collection of essays exposes the reader to the haptics field, the haptic sense, and some examples of haptic technology. They cover over 50 years of research and terminology, and thus will be a handy reference for any researcher.

Download or read book HCI Beyond the GUI written by Philip Kortum. This book was released on 2008-06-13. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As technology expands and evolves, one-dimensional, graphical user interface (GUI) design becomes increasingly limiting and simplistic. Designers must meet the challenge of developing new and creative interfaces that adapt to meet human needs and technological trends. HCI Beyond the GUI provides designers with this know how by exploring new ways to reach users that involve all of the human senses. Dr. Kortum gathers contributions from leading human factors designers to present a single reference for professionals, researchers, and students. - Explores the human factors involved in the design and implementation of the nontraditional interfaces, detailing design strategies, testing methodologies, and implementation techniques - Provides an invaluable resource for practitioners who design interfaces for children, gamers and users with accessibility needs - Offers extensive case studies, examples and design guidelines
