As the most elaborate and extensive linguistic tool available, it contains about 30 000 individual entries, many of which have multiple senses and include subentries, multiword phrases or idioms. If you are intending to learn any new language, you'll find a recommendation to get a phrase book. The purpose of the phrase book is to give you prior practice in real-life situations. Memorizing phrases ahead of time is the BEST way to use a phrase book. Your grammar book, and sometimes even your course, does not give you the "Which room is mine?" kind of phrases. Yes, you will need to flip through the book to find responses or the next question on a different topic, but that is only if you do not practice a bit ahead of time. You can't beat this book - for the price and the small, yet concise and relevant content. Learn how to tell time, order food, go through customs, as well as greetings and social conversations. The pronunciation guides are especially helpful. The lexicon of Haitian Creole is derived primarily (90%) from French. This word-base, however, has been enriched with borrowings from other languages with which Haitian Creole speakers historically had contact. The last few pages of the book contain the Plan of Salvation with scripture reference. Since Creole is a phonetic language, the English speaker can learn to read the Creole with a bit of practice, and although they may not understand what they are reading, the Haitian Creole listener will understand.

Book excerpt: Creole languages are characteristically associated with a negative image. How has this prestige been formed? And is it as static as the diglossic situation in many anglo-creolophone societies seems to suggest? This volume examines socio-historical and epistemological factors in the prestige formation of Caribbean English-Lexicon Creoles and subjects their classification as a (socio)linguistic type to scrutiny and critical debate. In its analysis of rich empirical data this study also demonstrates that the uses, functions and negotiations of Creole within particular social and linguistic practices have shifted considerably. Rather than limiting its scope to one "national" speech community, the discussion focusses on changes of the social meaning of Creole in various discursive fields, such as inter generational changes of Creole use in the London Diaspora, diachronic changes of Creole representation in written texts, and diachronic changes of Creole representation in translation. The study employs a discourse analytical approach drawing on linguistic models as well as Foucauldian theory.
