Book excerpt: Graduate research is a complicated process which many engineering and science students aspire to undertake. The complexity of the process can lead to failures for even the most brilliant students. Success with graduate level research requires not only a high level of intellectual ability, but also a high level of program management skills. After many years of supervising several graduate students, I have found that most of them have the same basic problems of planning and implementing their research programs. Even the advanced graduate students need the same 'mentoring and management' guidance that has little to do with actual classroom performance. It is my conjecture that graduate students could make a better job of their research programs if a self-paced guide were available to them. The guide provided in this book covers topics ranging from how to select an appropriate research problem to how to schedule and execute research tasks. The book takes a project management approach to planning and implementing graduate research in engineering, science and manufacturing disciplines. It is a self paced guide that will help graduate students and advisors answer most of the basic questions about 'how to do this and how to do that'. There is a need for such a guide book. The book will alleviate frustration on the part of the student and the research advisor.

Book Synopsis Designing and Managing a Research Project by : Michael Jay Polonsky

Download or read book Designing and Managing a Research Project written by Michael Jay Polonsky. This book was released on 2005. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: `The authors did an excellent job of addressing many of the "real world" issues in conducting a business research project. They have given care to address some of the issues that often represent the major stumbling blocks for students engaged in business research projects.... An excellent text.... It is concise, very readable and addresses many of the issues that we, as instructors, grapple with as we assign research projects′ - Andrew M Forman, PhD, Hofstra University Designing and Implementing a Research Project is a concise, easy to read text designed to guide business students through the various aspects of designing and managing research projects. The focus is on research projects that have a solid academic basis, although some implications for more applied projects are also highlighted. It is divided into three main sections, `Laying the Foundations′, `Undertaking the Research′, and `Communicating the Results′, which present a logical flow for the research project. A unique aspect of the book is the inclusion of particular chapters on topics like supervision, group work and ethics, and the focus of the discussion of data analysis (qualitative and quantitative). The authors have applied their years of past experience in supervising student projects, when writing this book to provide some actual examples of problems and practical guidelines. This unique book presents a step-by-step guide for undertaking research projects that is multidisciplinary in focus and student friendly in style. It could be used, as either a text, or a supplementary text on courses in management (including industrial psychology) and marketing. Graduate students in related fields such as health care administration, public administration, and nursing administration would also find this text useful.

Book excerpt: Master the fundamentals of planning, preparing, conducting, and presenting engineering research with this one-stop resource Engineering Research: Design, Methods, and Publication delivers a concise but comprehensive guide on how to properly conceive and execute research projects within an engineering field. Accomplished professional and author Herman Tang covers the foundational and advanced topics necessary to understand engineering research, from conceiving an idea to disseminating the results of the project. Organized in the same order as the most common sequence of activities for an engineering research project, the book is split into three parts and nine chapters. The book begins with a section focused on proposal development and literature review, followed by a description of data and methods that explores quantitative and qualitative experiments and analysis, and ends with a section on project presentation and preparation of scholarly publication. Engineering Research offers readers the opportunity to understand the methodology of the entire process of engineering research in the real word. The author focuses on executable process and principle-guided exercise as opposed to abstract theory. Readers will learn about: An overview of scientific research in engineering, including foundational and fundamental concepts like types of research and considerations of research validity How to develop research proposals and how to search and review the scientific literature How to collect data and select a research method for their quantitative or qualitative experiment and analysis How to prepare, present, and submit their research to audiences and scholarly papers and publications Perfect for advanced undergraduate and engineering students taking research methods courses, Engineering Research also belongs on the bookshelves of engineering and technical professionals who wish to brush up on their knowledge about planning, preparing, conducting, and presenting their own scientific research.
