Book Synopsis Good Governance in Economic Development by : Sarah Biddulph

Book excerpt: With isolationism and protectionism strengthening in response to the forces of globalization, the interrelationship of the national and supranational in shaping good governance norms has become increasingly relevant. Good Governance in Economic Development critically examines the transparency and accountability mechanisms underpinning international trade, finance, and investment regimes, particularly in view of the intensifying influence of China. It also explores the Chinese state’s engagement with these norms, shedding light not only on how the principles of transparency, accountability, and public participation are applied within China, but also on the ability of China to affect international rules.

Download or read book Corruption, Good Governance And Economic Development: Contemporary Analysis And Case Studies written by Md Abu Bakar Siddique. This book was released on 2014-12-30. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corruption, Good Governance and Economic Development adopts a non-Eurocentric approach towards good governance issues in Asia and Africa on practical and theoretical levels. Edited by R N Ghosh and M A B Siddique, this volume features contributions from distinguished scholars and policy makers who examine whether there is any correlation between the level of corruption in a country and its rate of economic change. These chapters are the outcome of major papers that were presented in conferences on the topic of “Good Governance and Economic Development” presented in Australia and India in June and December 2009 respectively, and it is hoped that they will bridge the gap in the area of good governance from a non-Western perspective in existing development literature.

Book Synopsis Is Good Governance Good for Development? by : Anisuzzaman (Anis) Chowdhury

Download or read book Is Good Governance Good for Development? written by Anisuzzaman (Anis) Chowdhury. This book was released on 2012-08-02. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is available as open access through the Bloomsbury Open Access programme and is available on bloomsburycollections.com. While good governance is a worthy goal, this book argues that it is not a prerequisite for economic growth or development. The book exposes the methodological shortcomings of the commonly-used governance indicators developed within the World Bank. The authors argue that donors should not impose onerous good governance conditions, expecting the developing world to simulate now-developed countries. They contend that most poor countries lack the administrative and financial capacity to achieve these reforms or institutions - so donor conditionality often becomes a recipe for failure. In place of grand government reforms aimed at enhancing market efficiency, the book's position is that the reform agenda should target strategic bottlenecks for development and enhance the state's capacity to deal with these disruptions. Bringing together contributions from leading political scientists, political economists and development practitioners, this is the first book to provide a systematic critical perspective on received notions of good governance.
