Book excerpt: Globalization Reappraised: A Talisman or a False Oracle analyzes the emergence of Washington Consensus inspired globalization model in the post cold war era. It presents a comprehensive scholarly survey of the literature, impact of the model on technology, ethno/religious revivalism, environment, human rights, rule of law, and income inequality, and the rise of unprincipled populist political demagogues in Asia, Africa, Europe, and the United States. The book also discusses the devastating impact of the 2008 global financial crisis due to unbridled, unregulated free market system. These developments have raised serious doubts about once considered inevitable, invincible globalization model. Serious soul searching to fix or even discard some of its negatives has become significant part of policy discussions from Delhi to Devos. The concluding chapter of the book analyzes several alternative models by raising the question about the direction and nature of the model itself.

Book Synopsis Financial Globalization by : Mr.Kenneth Rogoff

Download or read book Financial Globalization written by Mr.Kenneth Rogoff. This book was released on 2006-08-01. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The literature on the benefits and costs of financial globalization for developing countries has exploded in recent years, but along many disparate channels and with a variety of apparently conflicting results. For instance, there is still little robust evidence of the growth benefits of broad capital account liberalization, but a number of recent papers in the finance literature report that equity market liberalizations do significantly boost growth. Similarly, evidence based on microeconomic (firm- or industry-level) data shows some benefits of financial integration and the distortionary effects of capital controls, while the macroeconomic evidence remains inconclusive. We attempt to provide a unified conceptual framework for organizing this vast and growing literature. This framework allows us to provide a fresh synthetic perspective on the macroeconomic effects of financial globalization, in terms of both growth and volatility. Overall, our critical reading of the recent empirical literature is that it lends some qualified support to the view that developing countries can benefit from financial globalization, but with many nuances. On the other hand, there is little systematic evidence to support widely cited claims that financial globalization by itself leads to deeper and more costly developing country growth crises.

Download or read book The Palgrave Handbook of Globalization with Chinese Characteristics written by Paulo Afonso B. Duarte. This book was released on 2023-01-07. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook offers readers various perspectives on globalization and multilateralism with Chinese characteristics. Its originality is derived from the hybrid approaches the handbook takes, where chapters provide complementary, intertwined, and multi-level analysis on the topic. Based on contributions of scholars and practitioners from a number of countries, the handbook helps readers to comprehend ongoing debates on the Belt and Road Initiative and global governance, within a shifting balance of world power, characterized by competing views between Western and Chinese norms, standards, values, and narratives. Split into three Parts, and consisting of 46 chapters, the handbook views globalization as comprehensive concept that benefits from the contributions of various disciplines such as geography, geo-economics, political science and international relations. In producing one of the most ambitious and updated outputs on the topic, the handbook as a whole seeks to discuss what globalization with Chinese characteristics looks like, and the role of the Belt and Road Initiative in this process.
