Book Synopsis Giovanni Pietro Campana (1808-1880) by : Susanna Sarti

Download or read book Giovanni Pietro Campana (1808-1880) written by Susanna Sarti. This book was released on 2001-01-01. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Campana, a businessman from Rome, formed one of the most important private collections of antiquities of the 19th century, yet it has been little studied. This thesis examines Campana's private life, his role as patron of the arts, archaeologist and collector and his trial for fraud, ending in exile. Much of the volume aims to reconstruct the collection, sold off by the papacy, that included Etruscan, Greek and Roman ceramics, jewellery, coins, glass, paintings, sculptures and medieval and Renaissance art. The list of objects, many of which are illustrated, includes current locations. This is the same book as BAR S971 (2001), but in hardback with a colour jacket.

Book Synopsis The Archaeology of the Mediterranean Iron Age by : Tamar Hodos

Download or read book The Archaeology of the Mediterranean Iron Age written by Tamar Hodos. This book was released on 2020-09-17. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mediterranean's Iron Age period was one of its most dynamic eras. Stimulated by the movement of individuals and groups on an unprecedented scale, the first half of the first millennium BCE witnesses the development of Mediterranean-wide practices, including related writing systems, common features of urbanism, and shared artistic styles and techniques, alongside the evolution of wide-scale trade. Together, these created an engaged, interlinked and interactive Mediterranean. We can recognise this as the Mediterranean's first truly globalising era. This volume introduces students and scholars to contemporary evidence and theories surrounding the Mediterranean from the eleventh century until the end of the seventh century BCE to enable an integrated understanding of the multicultural and socially complex nature of this incredibly vibrant period.

Book Synopsis Insights into Portuguese Medical History by : Maria do Sameiro Barroso

Download or read book Insights into Portuguese Medical History written by Maria do Sameiro Barroso. This book was released on 2022-10-11. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite its richness as a potential research field, the history of medicine in Portugal has received relatively little attention outside the country. This book develops some of the understudied themes of Portuguese medical history and delivers them to a wider audience by bringing together the work of a group of international scholars. Here, a unique set of innovative studies begins to uncover details of the lives, medical practice and research of some famous and less well-known Portuguese physicians, the Portuguese response to past pandemics, and analyses of a wide range of items of medical material culture and materia medica. The contributions here elucidate topics as wide-ranging as Graeco-Roman medicine and surgery, the history of spectacles, defence against plague and other epidemics, the history of medicinal emeralds and cinchonine, and echoes of the first female forensic physician in Portugal. This book will appeal to all those with an interest in the history of science, and especially those who enjoy the history of medicine and pharmacy.
