Book Synopsis Get a Grip on MAIN IDEA by : Olive McArdle Kulas

Download or read book Get a Grip on MAIN IDEA written by Olive McArdle Kulas. This book was released on 2012-02-26. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an easy to use resource for parents and teachers of children in grades two through four. It explicitly teaches children how to get the main idea from many details in an informational text. Because the main idea is an abstract concept, it is difficult for young readers to grasp. This skill is often not taught explicitly in school; children grapple to learn it on their own. This workbook teaches the main idea using concrete and abstract models so the child progressively gains a firm grasp of this critical element of reading comprehension. The new national academic standards, used in most state tests, expect the child to get the main idea in an informational text and know the relationship between the main idea and details that support or do not support it. Tasks in this workbook prepare the child to be a successful reader and a confident test taker. This workbook can be used to tutor older students and is useful for English Language Learners. Books 2 and 3 expand the concept in more difficult texts.

Download or read book Get a Grip on MAIN IDEA and SUMMARY written by Olive McArdle Kulas. This book was released on 2012-04-02. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This workbook is designed as a tool for parents and teachers who want to give a child in grades 3 though 6 the opportunity to learn the abstract concept of main idea in a concrete and progressive manner. Main idea is the cornerstone of comprehension, yet how to get the main idea is seldom explained and modeled in a way a child can grasp its meaning and use it when reading. This workbook is a step-by-step instruction on how to get the main idea in a paragraph, in a layered difficult paragraph, and in a multi-paragraph essay. The child will learn to use the "tools" of text structures (topic sentences, details, parts of an essay---introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion) to get the main idea. Instruction moves from a paragraph to a multi-paragraph essay, and to essays with more than one main idea. The child will also learn to distinguish the most important details and to explain how details support the main idea. Having learned these key elements, the child will use them to write a concise summary. Opportunities are provided for the child to take tests that mirror state tests. These tasks help prepare the child to be successful on school assignments and on high stakes tests that measure the national Common Core State Standards.

Book excerpt: Get a Grip on Main Idea: The Key to Unlocking Reading Comprehension is a step-by-step instruction of a core skill that needs to be mastered by successful readers in elementary grades. This key skill is often not taught explicitly. It is left to be "caught" by students who muddle to grasp an abstract concept that makes the difference between understanding meaning and not grasping learning. To master main idea, students need to learn about making generalizations. The National Common Core State Standards expect students in third grade and above to have the capacity to determine the main idea and analyze the relationship between the main idea and details in informational texts. This series of workbooks (Books 1, 2, and 3) prepares students to be successful on state assessments that measure knowledge of the main idea and whether details support or do not support it. Students will also learn how to use their knowledge of main idea and details to write a summary---another key skill needed throughout life and measured by a range of high stakes tests. Equipped with these skills, students have the edge to ace learning in any text across history, science, math, and the arts. They will have a life-long skill they can apply to comprehending more complex texts in middle school and beyond. Book 1 is appropriate for students in grades two through four, and for students learning English. It is a helpful resource for tutoring and remedial instruction.

Book excerpt: Designated by The New York Times Book Review as a must-read in 2008 for the next U.S. president, Lapps unique take and laser-like logic invite readers to try on a new, invigorating way of seeing the world. With her characteristic boldness, she takes on a set of disempowering ideas driving economic and ecological crises, challenging readers to rethink the meaning of power, democracy, and hope itself. In her punchy, no-holds-barred style, Lapp weaves together fresh insights, startling facts, and stirring vignettes of regular people pursuing ingenuous solutions. ""My books intent,"" Lapp writes, ""is to enable us to see what is happening all around us but is still invisible to most of us people in all walks of life penetrating the spiral of despair and reversing it with new ideas, innovation and courage."" This updated and revised edition responds to Obama's presidency and the global financial collapse, concluding with reflection questions that are perfect for book groups.
