Book Synopsis Gerontechnology. A Clinical Perspective by : Alberto Pilotto

Download or read book Gerontechnology. A Clinical Perspective written by Alberto Pilotto. This book was released on 2023-07-21. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims at disseminating information and knowledge in Gerontechnology, a topic that is still considered a specific area of interest for techno-experts (i.e. informatics, engineers, bio-engineers, bio-statistics, etc.) while there is a relatively low diffusion of technological expertise among clinicians and other health professionals who are involved in the care of older people. In many parts of the world, average life expectancy is rising consistently, and at the same time technology is developing at a dramatic pace. This means having completely new options for the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of diseases and disabilities of older people but also a new challenge to improve the quality of life by promoting an active and healthy aging at population level. This book explores the technical developments that are beginning to change the management of diseases and disabilities of geriatric patients. These include advanced Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), i.e. the new online services in healthcare and electronic medical-health records, Assistive Technologies (AT), i.e. behavior and motility monitoring sensorial tools, smart homes tools and telemedicine tools as well as Human–Computer Interaction technologies (HCI), i.e. robots for supporting people with mobility or cognitive limitations, humanoid robots, exoskeletons and rehabilitation robots. The Work is divided into three main parts: 1) Technology in a world of aging people, 2) Clinical applications of technologies in older people, and 3) Older people and technologies interaction including privacy issues, acceptability of technologies by older people and education and training of healthcare professionals in gerontechnology. The book will be an invaluable tool for geriatricians and other health professionals who are involved in the care of older people.

Book excerpt: Two "megatrends" of modern culture are rapid population aging and the inexorable advances in various technologies encountered by the population at large. This comprehensive volume explores the intersections of technology with aging and serves as both a primer and reference for educators, students, researchers, and practitioners. It includes concepts from the basics of gerotechnologyóperson-environment fitóto the core activity fieldsócomputer and assistive devices and their practical applicationsóto models, or prototypes for technical development and its application to everyday life. Thought-provoking concluding chapters address ethical concerns for the future as well as offer new perspectives or context to ideas and innovations explored earlier.

Book Synopsis Gerontechnology by : Gari Lesnoff-Caravaglia

Download or read book Gerontechnology written by Gari Lesnoff-Caravaglia. This book was released on 2007. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aging does not occur in isolation but is a reflection of societal attitudes and resulting practical outcomes. Practical responses are principally the purview of engineering, technology, and the biomedical sciences, while the societal attitudes represent the ethical, philosophical, and social bases of the culture. Together they provide the inevitable link between the fields of gerontology and technology: Gerontechnology. The six sections of this groundbreaking book, Gerontechnology, detail this relationship. Part I describes the multi-faceted convergence of technology and aging, as well as the problems and challenges it presents. Part II serves as an introduction to both gerontologists and engineers to the age-related changes due to disease or senescence inherent in human aging and outlines potential areas of technological intervention. Part III addresses the problems and processes of invention, particularly ergonomics, which lead to the development of technologies specifically designed for the enhancement of the lives of the older population, while Part IV explores the range of sensory interventions currently available, particularly in the areas of vision and hearing, as well as describing those that hold greatest promise for future older populations. Automation through the employment of robots and advanced forms of transportation is the focus of Part V. The utilization of robots to increase the independence of older persons along with technological assistive mobility devices is given attention. The closing section, Part VI, includes a discussion of information processing communication and the effects of the constant and continuing interplay between technology and aging. This section also analyzes human experience from the perspective of the extraordinary framework for living provided by the growth of an aging population and the advanced technologies which have led to the conceptualization of Gerontechnology--the herald of a new age for human exploration.

Download or read book Examining the Rapid Advance of Digital Technology in Africa written by Amoah, Lloyd G. Adu. This book was released on 2024-02-23. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are essential questions surrounding Africa's digitalization journey, including whether or not the continent can truly serve as the last frontier for socio-economic transformation through digital innovation. An examination of countries such as Ghana, Kenya, Senegal, and Rwanda, which are actively pursuing digitalization, may provide some answers. To evaluate the potential implications, both real and potential, that arise from this focused pursuit, a critical analysis is necessary. Scrutiny of digital infrastructure by companies like Huawei, the emergence of artificial intelligence, and the advent of quantum computing will open new pathways to understanding and establishing promising approaches to the advancement of this region. Examining the Rapid Advance of Digital Technology in Africa offers a comprehensive exploration of the transformative power of digitalization in Africa and its implications for the continent's socio-economic development. It engages with the field of science and technology studies, linking it with socio-economic impacts and transformation, to track, analyze, understand, and critique Africa's contributions to digitalization. The chapters cover a wide range of themes, including ICTs and the business environment, education, healthcare, creative industries, media, culture, tourism, agriculture, ecology, artificial intelligence, blockchain and cryptocurrency revolution, algorithmic governance, the quantum age, and urbanization. This book is a must-read for researchers, scholars, investors, and policymakers who are interested in Africa's digital transformation, as it offers valuable insights into the latest empirical and theoretical aspects shaping the continent's ongoing digitalization.
